How, exactly, is that racist?

Sounds like it falls more under this category.
2 : racial prejudice or discrimination
But context is everything...

I've heard a few Canadian radio talk show hosts refer to Vancouver as Hongcouver or Vankong....Their belief being Vancouver is more like and influenced by Asia then any area or city in Canada or the west coast of North America...

Some of them were also suggesting Vancouver setup some sort of Pacific rim free trade pact with these Asian nations....

If I'd thought that entry was the appropriate one, I've had put it in bold.

I think that the term 'Hongcouver' is descriptive and thus is neither prejudicial nor discriminatory. Reading into it racist or other negative terms might be prejudicial on your part--against Hong Kong and people from there--but not against the person using the term 'Hongcouver'.

However, context, as you say, is very important.

If I were to say that Montreal is the Paris of North America, would people take offence?

Though I personally believe that people who are racist act against a group based on their belief, Hongcouver or Vankong aren't racist, after all, can cities be classed into race?

Perhaps if I were from Hong Kong, I'd be pleased that people view me in such a majority that they refer to the city and it's (perceived) dominant ethnic population, what about Chinatown? Little Italy?

We can only judge on information you give us The Chick See Profile, therefore, context and all, you can certainly manipulate our opinions by omitting or adding information.

I think HONGcouver is a fantastically descriptive term. Anyone who has lived in or visited Vancouver will be amazed at the sheer numbers of the Asian population. Whats more, you'll even find stop signs in Japanese! I think that's great! In Canada we pride ourselves on our multicultural foundation and heritage. The Asian community in Vancouver makes a huge contribution to the local economy as well. To suggest that the term Hongcouver is somehow racist is plain ridiculous.

im sorry to have omitted info. 3 hours sleep will do that. the discussion was on how ah-nold and his financial buddy mr issa dont want movies filed here over california anymore. the tone was degrading and i personally found it offensive (hence this being my rant, not my rant you should all believe and feel exactly the same way.)

The context is what's important. When I lived in Vancouver, the term 'Hongcouver' was generally used in a derogatory sense and should not be used by a political figure as common jargon. Sure, there is a large Asian population in Vancouver, but there is also a large Native population, a large gay population, Indian population, Ontario population, etc.

yes, in fact if you look around Vancouver now you'll notice a whole lot more east Indians then before.

Unless you're a blood North American Indian, then you are either an immigrant or descendant of one. So point the finger at yourself!

Actually...The North American Natives are a relatively recent addition to the population of the Continent. About 12,000 years ago.

Immigration policy is quite naturally the preserve of those that now live here. Should we need more of a certain type, we should let them in. Immigration is STRICTLY a political decision and should not hinge on racial values, IMO.

I guess I should have done a search, I just put a post up about this. I think it is a small minded person who makes comments like that. I was ready to kick in my T.V.! I would hope some of our politians have the backbone to say something about this .

And did you happen to just appear out of thin air? Look beneath yourself before you start finger pointing, besides, this country wouldn't run w/o the immigrants, anybody with a common sense will tell you that. I suggest you troll some others. :(:(

I`m sure if everyone thinks about it a "immigrant" has helped them out in one way or another. Be it shopping in their store or purchasing services from them or supporting the business they work for. The way I look at it is if they pay taxes and support the community Their Canadian!
