Just a shot in the dark...... check the grounding on all computers connected to the router. I don't know if there is a grounding conductor in the ethernet cable and if not, there could be sufficient ground potential difference between two machines to exceed the common mode input voltage of the chipset at either end. Mild cases might cause data disturbances and serious cases could blow the chips.
