| [Other] WinXP Hangs After Startup
I had this problem with Windows XP once before and fixed it from a tip here or on the SNET forum, anyhow--whenever I start up or restart WinXP, the desktop icons all come up (but I get an hour glass if I try to access anything)--but the startup theme, half of the icons in the system tray do not come up--there is this extremely long pause or hang of the OS then the theme kicks in and the icons in the system tray come up. It seems like it's trying to resolve something. I have tried disabling numerous things from startup including Norton's AntiVirus, same thing. I keep my startup pretty clean. If I remember correctly someone had suggested-- last time this happened, to assign my NIC a static IP address instead of a DHCP address from my SNET DSL service. But I can't remember if that's what fixed this problem or not. And it is setup that way now from last time. But this just started once again and I don't know what caused it to happen, but it's very irritating. I think last time I even reinstalled XP over itself and it made no difference. I know it turned out to be something very simple, but heck I can't remember what it was.
Does anyone have any suggestions. Thanks for your help.. |

| I tried 2 system restores and for some reason, it won't allow me. I got an error that it could not be completed. I tried to restore back to Sunday or Saturday...no luck. Before I had done the static IP address change last time I was being assigned an IP by my ISP, I only changed to a static IP to resolve this issue last time--and I think that was the fix--that's just it, I don't remember if it was or not. Maybe that was a tip to fix another issue I had at the time. I just wish I could remember if that was the fix or not. |

So you have assigned an IP address to TCP/IP bound to your network card?
If not, and you are using PPPoE software (including XP's built-in client) I would try that:

| Yes, I do have a static IP bound to my NIC. To verify the IP address is being bound to the NIC, I run IPCONFIG at a command prompt, and the information is correct.
I guess there has to be something else causing this hang-up/freeze. I just can't put my finger on it--I am thinking maybe it could be Norton SystemWorks 2003. It just seems too coincidental that this occurred around the time of the most most recent LiveUpdate I did.
I will checkout out Norton's website and see if there are issues with some of the recent updates they sent out. I will report back with my findings. Thanks for your help folks.
If you have any other suggestions let me know. |

Are you using DSL? |

| reply to ChuckB ChuckB,
What PC are you using.
I have a similar bootup problem with my Dell 4550 using Win XP Pro's PPPoE with Westell Speedstream modem and PacBell/SBC Yahoo DSL. Also using NAV 2003 and ZA Plus.
If modem is on when I first bootup I experience same "hang" symptoms as you i.e., "icons in the system tray do not come up--there is this extremely long pause or hang of the OS then the theme kicks in and the icons in the system tray come up". Also the NAV AutoProtect system tray icon has the red "X" showing it's disabled during the "hang" time. Like you, I tried disabling NAV and ZA+ from starting at bootup but did not solve the problem.
If modem is off when I first bootup Win XP starts up without any pause/hang.
I also have an Toshiba notebook with Win XP Home, NAV 2003 and ZA Free version. It boots/starts without any pause/hang with same modem on or off. |
