Just called to set up Comcast to replace my Dish. Installation is Monday but they are OUT of 6412s. I will get 2 6208s until they get more 6412s in stock.
What city are you in?

I will ask some Higher-Ups tomorrow and see if they are out of 6412's. I really doubt that they'd be out so soon but who knows? I'll try to follow-up tomorrow night.

Thanks. Installation is today but i would like to get the 6412s ASAP. The guy on the phone didn't hesitate when I said I wanted 2 6412s he immediately said they were out of those and I would get single tuner models and go on a waiting list for 6412s and they would contact me.

When I called to get a Dual tuner, I was told they were
out and it would be Mid-Jan before anymore would be available.

I was put on a list, and I told I would be contacted when they become available again.

I was in the Garland office Saturday dropping off an old 5100 box. They were surprised to hear I actually have a dual tuner. I told them I picked it up when they first came out in October.

She said they have been out of stock for a while now.

To those of you waiting on a 6412, I recommend going to your local Comcast office. You might strike out anyway but others have had better luck in person than over the phone or waiting for a notice.

Got my Comcast installation yesterday with the two 6208s. A few complaints:
1. Installer was terrible. Did not check anything. I got home and had no sound on Bedroom system (stereo only). Looked at back of 6208 and he had the audio cables in the INPUT! I switched them to output and everything worked. He also did not take the time to show my wife anything about how the system works. She was left to figure out everything for herself. I had laid out the cables so that all he needed to do was plug everything in but he insisted on pulling out equipment for no reason. I even left written instructions. He also tried to get my wife to hire him to install a new back door for us.
2. Two different remotes. Makes it a little hard for the family to get used to a new system when there are two completely different remotes for two identical receivers.
3. 6208s had PVRs that were full of recorded shows. I understand that used equipment is put back in service but the hard drives should be emptied - you never know what might be on there.
4. No manuals for the receivers.

This morning I was having a problem on some channels on one unit. All the colors were messed up. HD channels looked fine but regular digital cable channels were a nice shade of purple. I didn't have time to troubleshoot before work. I am using the DVI output on that unit if anyone has any ideas.

Thanks.

Kind of funny. I've seen a lot of complaints about service visits (not just Comcast) but that one takes the cake!

Seems like a definite no no. Pretty bad.

Sucks as well. If it's any help, I posted some links to various manuals a page or two back.

You might check the box to make sure it has the latest firmware. I'm not sure what it is up to these days but someone else should be able to confirm. I believe you check by hitting the select button on the remote when the power is turned off.

Thanks.

I called comcast tonight and talked to a csr to see what they new about on demand and the new guide coming next week. You would think that with a new guide coming out next weekend that they would have some info on it but nothing and they said vod has already been available for two weeks. I quess they will plop this guide on them a few days before everyone gets it. I didn't even ask is Garland getting vod which is basically one of a few areas to have it. For one thing they have been adding channels in the last two weeks to the menu and more content so I don't think that it has been ready yet til the day you said the whole metroplex will get it. I don't know where she got her info. They are so clueless. I called another number and talked to someone else asking about the new guide and they said you don't have a guide I said no there is supposed to be a new on screen guide in a week. He says do you mean vod, he says when that is offically launched there will be a menu added to the top left instead of just the main menu. I wonder how long that will be added to the tan crap which is supposed to be gone a few days later lol.

Any HD 'in the clear' here?

I don't believe this has been covered in previous posts, at least not from where I started reading. Are any HD channels on Comcast here (in Plano w/A-B) 'in the clear'? In other words, can I hook up one of the cables up to my TV that has a QAM tuner and receive local HD channels w/o the set top box? This would be nice, particularly until I can get a 6412 here. I do have the A-side hooked up now and did a scan, but the TV didn't discover any digital channels. I can try it with the B-side, too, but thought I would ask to see if it is worth exploring. Is all digital traffic already on the B-side, and the coming realignment will just remove the analog stuff?

Thanks,
Randy

Interesting...I had read some stuff over at AVS that suggested that there is an FCC mandate that they (locals broadcast in HD) be made available without STBs. Bummer. Thanks for the reply!

@comcast.net

There are many people over at AVS that say they can watch HD locals on there comcast cable without the use of a set top box... If I remember correctly the only channels you don't get are InHD 1 and 2 and maybe the Discovery Channel... Do a search over at AVS and I bet you find your answer.

Scotty,

How frustrated are you with VOD not up yet and that they have the nerve to taunt us with Channel 1....:) I know I'm ready to see it happen sooner than later. Are we all still thinking that the Dec 16 launch date?

Hanging in there in Frisco,

Well, I did a scan on the B-side last night (I had already tried the A-side earlier), and got nothing on the digital side. There is a slight chance it is a bug with my Mits...sometimes it has issues with scanning digitals. I might do a reset on it tonight and try again. Of course, this could also just be another 'benefit' of being on the dual cable system. It's good to know that Comcast is working on cleaning up AT&T's mess, though....

IFLYSWA, if you are trying to view "digital" channels on your Mits, that wont work... You will need a stb to view any "digital" source channel.. As for HD, I do believe that you should have access to those... Have you searched AVS yet to see what they say over there? I'm sure there is an answer for you over there... No need to re-invent the wheel, ya know?

Good Luck!

Hi Scotty...

I know that I can't view encrypted digital channels (without a CableCard, that is), but I should be able to view unencrypted digital channels since I have a QAM tuner built-in to my Mits DLP (just like I get OTA with the built-in ATSC tuner). And from what I've read, any local HDs that are carried by the cable company are supposed to be transmitted unencrypted over the wire. So even when the locals are not broadcasting in HD, just digital, I should (theoretically) be able to receive them. If they are being transmitted unencrypted, that is....again, the stuff about this being required is just hearsay. I definitely don't know that to be the case.

I've seen quite a bit of discussion on this over at AVS, but the problem is that this would be market specific. As we already know, Comcast's offerings can be quite different within various areas of the metroplex, much less across the country! I might post the question in the local HD info forum over there to see if anybody from the Plano, two-sided cable world that happens to have a built-in QAM tuner can let me know if it works for them...that might be kind of a tall order, though!

Thanks again for the input...and thanks for pointing this forum out to me over at AVS. It has been very, very helpful regarding local issues!
