| FAQ: What's the purpose of the Verizon Forum?
The DSLReports Verizon Forum is an information resource for the Verizon Online DSL Internet service. It's a place where users of (or anyone interested in) the Verizon DSL service can ask questions, share ideas, and exchange and gather information. -Verizon Online DSL FAQ
Now that Verizon has added BroadbandAccess to their offerings, will this forum be expanded? |

This is a very odd statement coming from Verizon as they offer DSL Service, Lol. -- -DSL Thunder Powered by: Verizon Online DSL @ 1525/136! [text was edited by author 2003-10-01 14:50:31] |

| reply to JTRockville "Its $80-a-month BroadbandAccess service, which begins Wednesday, is meant to compete mainly with other cell phone providers that have built their own wireless data networks.
The service promises the average user download speeds of 300 kilobits per second to 500 kilobits per second, a Verizon Wireless spokeswoman said."
At $80/month for 300-500 kbps, it certainly doesn't compete with Verizon's own 1500/128 ADSL offering at $30-35/month.

| At 19,300 cable feet from a CO, and no RT in sight, that 1500/128 ADSL line is the equivalent of *vaporware* for me. My very-limited-and-mostly-guessing understanding of this new offering, is that it runs over the existing voice network. So it's available anywhere Verizon cell phone service is available. Just pop the wireless network card into the laptop, log in, and you're on!
But I could find no one at Verizon who'd even heard of this new product when I called today (from 8 through 9 am eastern), and no email in my inbox from the person who promised to look into it for me. |

| reply to JTRockville Verizon Wireless is a separate business unit from the ILEC and VOL. It does not run over the phone lines at all but over microwave towers hence the term 'wireless'.
Here is an explanation of how cell phones work:
»electronics.howstuffworks.com/cell-phone.htm
It may require special equipment from them in order to transmit/receive the frequencies they use.

| reply to JTRockville Surely a matter germane enough for discussion... we've had telephony, wireless and DSL threads, in the past. It's rather hard to disconnect the various services. Perhaps, since (a) it's Verizon, and (b) it's internet service, it should be formally included. It will, of course, be a VZ Wireless operation, not VOL... but recall, this forum was started when it was bell Atlantic and GTE, and when the "broadband"reports.com was "dsl"reports.com ... damn technology has the shelflife of an over-ripe banana... We can adapt as the tech adapts... we really rather have to, don't we? -- Every knot was once straight rope... |

Right - when I said "existing voice network", I meant "existing wireless voice network". But I guess it's not just a voice network.
Thanks for the link!
Speaking of links... I found the Verizon link for this product, including a phone number: High Speed Wireless, BroadbandAccess
I tried calling, but they don't open until 8am - will try again later. |

| reply to JTRockville Sorry for my confusion, not much sleep and the technical type in me tends to get a bit literal.
Any technology that can widen the footprint of internet access has got to be good for all and competition is definitely always good. -- Always Reach Beyond Your Grasp |

| LOL, mikepd . No problem. I'm actually quite anal with terms literal myself, when it's a topic I know something about.
I was really confused about this product though... and I'm not really up to speed on wireless networks at all, even though I use a cell phone and tried a hotspot once.
I assumed this was the same thing as the recently installed NY pay-phone hotspots, and thought you had to be 300' from one of them. But apparently that's not the case.
From my phone call today:
What was formerly known as ExpressNetwork, is now called NationalAccess, has a pretty wide coverage area - very attractive. Speeds are 144k/144k @ $80/mo.
BroadbandAccess (includes NationalAccess) offers download speeds of up to 2mb, with an average 300-500k. Upload still 144k. Priced @ $80/mo, with a 1 year committment.
Promo for BroadbandAccess is one month free with 2 year committment. *yawns* not very tempting.
Speeds for BroadbandAccess were pumped up a bit for a recent news article from techweb: "peak speeds up to 2.4 Mbps and typical speeds of 300-600 kbps";
I'd be sold if I could find a promo for around $50/mo. At $80/mo, I'm a little hesitant.
(btw - Please feel free to correct any of the terms I use incorrectly, as I truly enjoy learning!) |
