Did comcast add a firewall to my pc?

I have just transfered over from dsl to cable. I have a linksys router with the latest firmwire...Speeds are great..everything is great except one thing..

I play a few online video games sometimes in my spare time. 1 of which is counter-strike, no counter-strike has updated its version and is all new. But i can't play ever since the update. here is one of the error messages that i get when chatting on cs friends... " Your firewall settings are preventing you from connecting to the friends network"

right now you must be thinking ok...why is he posting here..

well im posting here because, these problems all happened after i swiched to cable internet. Does comcast load some firewall on to the machines?

I doubt it my router because I've had it before, only with the dsl and i had no problems.

Something is happening and my pc is getting firewalled

any one have any ideas at all??

you say counter strike put out an update and since the update you can no longer play..

so it wasn't just the change in Internet providers.

Comcast doesn't put customers on an internal firewall.. other than blocking a few ports that some virus/trojans like to exploit (usually windows netbios related) there are no firewalls other than the one(s) you use for your PC.

is it possible you need to change the settings on your linksys router (firewall) to allow the game to work with the new ISP.

check the game settings too.. way too often new updated versions will add new default settings that often time will mess up old settings..

I'm getting ready to install comcast HSI as soon as the modem arrives. How do I do the setup manually? Is there a internet link?

The linksys page is: »192.168.1.1 the username is admin and the pass is admin (unless you have changed them). The linksys forum might get you more help with this router-related problem.

Wow, is it really that easy Data Ho? Is there no passwords, or login ID's needed? I'm on DSL right now and moving to cable. On DSL I had to setup PPPOE with a user id and password. Is it really that plug and play for a new cable account? The customer service rep who I signed up with made a point of making sure I knew my sign up number and account number. Do I need these input someplace to get the cable to work.

I'm excited because the new modem should be here tomorrow and I want to be ready.

Thank you very much!
Rob

No there are no passwords/user id's, but have you provisioned your modem yet? (read them your modem's mac and serial number). If you haven't, you won't get any connection.

Nope, haven't provisioned yet, I am hoping the modem will be here tomorrow. Does provisioning mean calling them on the phone? I was expecting to have to load the software on the CD mentioned in this thread to do all that. But if I don't have to use this software, I won't.

Is comcast bringing the modem to you or something? How do you know CS isin't working if you don't even have the modem? No you don't need the software to provision the modem, There's a number you have to call, but I can't remember what it is right now.

Comcast is mailing me the modem. After reading this thread I wanted to be ready and to know how to set up my service with out running the software on the CD to avoid the problems that aeroman8991 is having.

Well if they are shipping you the modem then it's probably already provisioned. Just plug it into your router (make sure it's set to DHCP everything). That software is a complete waste, it just adds banner ads.

Robm15 See Profile, I think you're in an ex-ATTB region, so to provision your modem, you may need to use sas registration, rather than a phone call:
»Website to comcast west to register

You'll need your username/password for email.

Actually this is one of the problems that is associated with Steam and CS. I play TFC and have not updated yet. You may want to check out the Steam forums (if you manage to wade thru the 15,000 complaint posts in ONE day alone!)
