| Port 25 outbound blocking
When did DSLX start blocking port 25 outbound?
The last piece of mail that got sent out successfully was around the 15th, right before the switchover.
While I appreciate you guys looking out for us, I sure wish you'd at least tell us before you do such things. It sure would beat trying to debug bounces only to find out from your web pages port 25 outbound is being blocked. IIRC, the original TOS I signed was no filtering of any kind. Are there any other ports getting filtered I should know about. (well, okay, if you if you can block that 21cn.com for me I would appreciate that )
I've just signed up for that port 25 waiver thingy so here's hoping for a resolution shortly. |

| Only new customers as of this point have had the block put into place. A few customer who had their circuits rebuilt in our router for trouble shooting purposes (i.e. gabbr last Friday when he was having a problem connecting) would have had the filter added to their connection.
We are going to be sending an email out to the older customers informing them of the change and how to register their mail servers before we migrate over the old customers.
Thanks, George DSLExtreme |

| DSLE - have you changed your policy from "Non blocking ports" to "Blocking some ports"?
The answer ("yes"/"no") is important to know because I took the DSLE service at a time when it was advertised as "non blocking" service, and it was one of the major reasons to consider. |

| There have been many problems internet wide with both spam and viruses. We are trying to take preventative actions to contain these within the DSLExtreme network.
With the sobig virus for example it has its own built in engine to send mail directly from an infected computer. Also there were problems a while back with DSLExtremes mail servers getting blocked due to open relay servers running on customers DSL connections that were compromised and sent out spam to AOL. This caused the entire network to be blocked and much frustration for many customers.
Because we know that the virus and spam problems are only going to get bigger we have decided to implement this port 25 filter. Those people who run mail servers or have a need to use a different outgoing mail server will be able to do register their mail servers to have the port 25 filter removed. We feel that this is the best way to allow customers to still run mail servers but contain the possible (spam/viruses) from the network. |

This is actually a bad news, meaning that DSLE goes the AOL way in treating its customers. Sorry to hear that you push us to think about looking for a substitute... |

| I think you are missing the point that you can have the port unblocked by registering. If you use your own mail server it will not effect you in anyway as you can have it opened.
We do not block ports to inconvenience customers only to try to help the customers on the network be protected from spam and viruses. If you would like it removed we will gladly have it removed when you register. |

| reply to gabbr as far as i know, all the isps that do block port 25, don't allow you to unblock it at your request. Not to mention most pppoe with sbc and lots of other providers block more then just 25 like port 80 and such.
That's why i like DSL Extreme, when i signed up the first i thing i looked for was if i was able to host a server and when i found out i could then i was excited. Then all of a sudden my port 25 was blocked i called DSL Extreme, they told me they filtered... told me to go to the website and register, then they rebuilt me and no harm done.... i was still able to recieve email to my server even though port 25 was blocked... so i guess it only blocks the outgoing, not the incoming, but either way.... at least dsl extreme gives me the option to remove it |

Personally, I would prefer an ISP that blocks ports by default, and allows you to EASILY request complete-unblocking (which is the case here). Do we want more open relays on the internet, or 1 minute of someone's time to fill out the unblock form if they know exactly what they're doing? Yeah, that's what I thought. *looks at his Spam box in disgust* |

Actually SBC only recently decided to block netbios ports because they exhausted other methods to try and get the viruses under control. It affected performance for a LOT of customers for over a month, while my DSLX circuit was smooth sailing the whole time. As far as I understand it, 80 is still unblocked.
So, I like how DSLX has handled the virus situation. I just know if my outbound 25 port had become blocked it would have thrown me for a big loop unless there was some sort of email describing the change. Instead I read about it from a guy experiencing problems who found the info buried in the sign-up information on the web site; not a great way to learn about such an important issue. I wasn't affected being on static service, but I can really sympathize with those who were, and it would be wise for them to let us know.
As long as there's an opt-out process for people who understand how to use those ports responsibly and really need it, blocks are a very good thing. What good is it to be able to run a mail server if everyone is just going to reject your IP? Blocking Joe Spamming Schmoe and Suzie Infected Q means the rest of us that need to use the port are going to be able to do so effectively. And one less ISP for spammers to abuse is a step in the right direction.

Now I read it here... port 25 is blocked. Arg!!! |

My port 25 is currently not blocked. However, I went ahead and signed up for the "not blocking" anyway. Will this screw things up for me?
I cannot have this port blocked because that is my lifeline to the outside world as far as for my emails. |

| reply to gabbr DSLExtreme, do us all a favor. Let us know when you block a port so we do not waste our time trying to figure out what is wrong. Now the favor... for all of the customers who opt to not block port 25 and get a virus/worm, DUMP THEIR ARSE as a customer. -- The only perfect science is hind-sight. |
