| reply to processauto processauto, what that refers to is just a suggestion to run a constant ping to some external server in order to keep the connection "alive" until the DW6000 stall issue is fixed. If you have a DW6000 and are getting these 20 second or more stalls it seems eliminate the problem. As someone said in another thread, it's a band-aid.
In Windows, open a command prompt box and issue the command "ping anyserver -t" where anyserver is any external server that will respond to your pings. You can then minimize the command box and the stalls should subside. An example would be "ping www.direcpc.com -t".
In Linux, open a console and the command would be "ping anyserver", with the example "ping www.direcpc.com". -- Why must I feel like that? Why must I chase the cat? Nothin' but the dog in me. |

| Hi All, I have been following the discussion in this forum on the DW6000 (and using the speed tests and tweaks) so it's about time I signed up and chimed in. Thanks to PetDude and all who do such fantastic work and give great advice.
Here in the boonies, I have always had only one option for a fast connection: satellite. I started with the one-way and moved up to the 2 way system over 2 years ago. I'd love to get the DW6000 upgrade to improve my home network and so I can pull my laptop (the host box) without my wife losing her connection. (I actually have a way around this, but it's a pain.)
I've been on the phone with DirecWay sales several times. Yesterday I called Galaxy Broadband and spoke with Al (nice guy) in sales. No one has an upgrade or knows what the upgrade path is yet. Al thought the upgrade would require an installer to come out. I referred him to the DirecWay site that says "easily user upgradeable" and sent him the URL.
Yesterday the sales person at DirecWay said they are working out the problems with making the DW6000 compatible with all existing 2 way user situations and so we can do it ourselves. They didn't know when this would happen, but he guessed two weeks. He said DirecWay will be selling it directly, although Al from Galaxy thought it would have to go through resellers. I told DirecWay I had signed up on the site for notification and he said I would probably hear before them.
All for now.

I quit calling tech about a year ago because they have NEVER solved a problem. I usually reboot, check here for outages, wait an hour or two, or in the extreme uninstall/reinstall. Sometimes I just give up and the next day it works. I started with 1-way when they started years ago so have had many conversations with them in the past.
Anyway, I put my name on the list for upgrade so I can move my router to the window near the dish since when I moved my computer to the other end of the house signal dropped from 85 to 50 (probably bad cables) so any little rain and I lose connection.
I hope it really is only two weeks before they start shipping the upgrade DW6000. -- Jerry AMD 2400+ 512 RAM, Win XP Pro, DW v4.0.3.9, Gateway IP: 66.82.10.50, Sat G-11 1350 MHz Vertical, Avg. Signal 53 |

Thank you for doing it though... helps others of us (including us lurkers) from going crazy. Good to know I am not the only one awaiting this info with baited breath. I have 2 laptops that have various problems connecting through my wireless LAN using the ICS, probably because my desktop hooked to the DW4000 is a piece of junk Win 98 SE. My third laptop running Win2k pro works fine, though.
But I would love to take my desktop out of the loop, maybe upgrade the OS and do some stuff with it, but for now I am stuck with a cruddy OS that locks up and crashes on average once a day, and with it goes down my internet connection for my laptop. I am tired of throwing time down a sink hole.. now I want to throw some hardware at the problem instead
I don't want to pay 425 bucks but if that is the price (as rumored) I probably will pay it... though if it requires a full year commitment I may just buy the whole deal over again. With a new baby in the house as a first time father and first time new homeowner, my times is at a premium, I just don't want to spend another 4 or 5 fruitless hours trying to get everything to work properly. Guess I was spoiled by cable modems, it was much easier to get a LAN connecting properly with it. |

I saw another forum on dslreports.com that seemed to have a $425 price tag for upgrades from 4000 to the DW6000. price complaining aside - is there any truth to this number? I can't seem to find it on direcway.com anywhere. -- srs direcway 4.0.3.9, DAK403_P14, 99W, 970MHz, w2k server host, emac g4, ibook g3 & macintosh pb 12in, all OSX 10.2.6, dell 8100-winme, replaytv 5040 w/ dvarchive. |

AFAIK, the only place to quote this price is in a thread on DSLreports. Not sure if that is the price it will end up being or not, though I really hope it is far more reasonable.
Unfortunately, even if it isn't I probably will get it as soon as I can. |

Called Direcway sales again today. I told them I am posting info to a forum on Broadband Reports and was referred up the line to an agent named Bobbi. Her comment: "Not a word yet. Not even a whisper, And I'm good at listening to whispers." She added that the upgrade should be less than the total package, to which I responded, "I would hope so."
Don't know how much good this does, but I'll probably check again next week. |

When the DW6000 was first released, there was a "target date" for the wider upgrade release that was internally announced only. That date leaked out, and was toward the end of October. Obviously, the target date was missed. Once can only guess that the steps required to get every satellite/transponder combination ready for the new equipment is taking longer than originally anticipated. -- Why must I feel like that? I suppose we shouldn't be surprised. They announced the DW4020 almost a year before anyone could actually buy one. (And their sales pitch turned out to be less than truthful.)
With the DW6000 it looked like they might be getting it right. The product appears to be on the mark, but they need to get on with it. -- Bragging: DirecWay SRS BE Satmex5 117 1250 MHz, v4.0.3.9 SPC, Via EPIA Mini-ITX 533 MHz 512MB, Win2k Server SP4, WinRoute Pro, Red Hat Linux, Mozilla browser, OpenOffice.org; terrific wife & kids, live on a farm by Big Creek. |

OH PLEASE OH PLEASE OH PLEASE OH PLEASE PLEEEAASSE Let me upgrade to a dw6000. Pretty please with sugar on top...
Ok, I feel better now Actually I am not really THAT desperate for the dw6000 anymore. I found that when I installed the Cisco VPN client on my new laptop, it changed some stuff in the networking, (as well as the appearance of my login screen, etc), and now I can surf just fine like I could with my other laptop.
Wish I could install that client on my wife's old laptop she refuses to get rid of, but somehow I think it might not play well with Windows 95. |

All,
I just got off the phone with Direcway and this is what this particular sales person said:
Still no upgrade path has been announced. However, he did state that with the DW6000 is married pretty tightly with the transmitter/receiver on the dish that everyone would have to buy all of the equipment, not just the modem. The 599 price is inclusive of installation.
If you when through a VAR (like I am with Earthlink). You are SOL. It will be up to the individual VARs if there will be a upgrade path or not. There isn't any guarantees to be allowed to upgrade.
That is the story today, subject to frequent changes. The info is provided as is and was accurate up to the point I hung up from Direcway. |

Q: Do I need to get a new dish for the DW6000? A: No. The DW6000 upgrade kit requires no modifications to your outdoor DIRECWAY equipment.
