DW6000 Release Timeframe

Okay, okay, I understand why my other post was locked, no problem!
I wasn't aware of the NDA and I surely don't want anyone to brake an agreement.

Still I would like to know if anyone knows, or can guess from experience, how long it usually takes from the time of testing until an item like this hits the market. There must be some people who observed it with the DW4020, and I'd expect this to be similar.

Just have to make a decision if I buy a Windows machine or keep waiting. The DW4020 isn't the solution for me, so I hope to see a much improved and affordable modem with the DW6000.

Thanks Vic, very helpful. That's exactly what I was looking for!
It almost sounds like they can already supply the modem with new orders, to US customers anyway.
My task is to find out if it is available north of the border, which could be a bigger challenge.

That document seems a bit odd.

They say there is no host software, but yet they are very picky about the O/S version - right down to the amount of free disk space.

I didn't see anything about an upgrade price for an existing DW4000 user. Anyone know?

Yes... A .pdf file on a secure page. Nice link. Looks like the promotional effort for this unit is also in beta.

Obvious question: If no software goes on the PCs that connect to the 6000, then why can't you connect Linux boxes to the 6000? The Windows requirement is... odd. Does anyone know? Or is it just one of those "we don't support it" deals, and once the tech leaves the premises you can do as you please?

Wonder if just the modem could be upgraded without having to buy a whole new system again. It would be nice if we could just upgrade the modem and nothing else. It would free up some desktop space too.

I'm suspecting that someotherguy has figured out the reason for the hardware requirements. I think what they are trying to convey is that if your computer does not meet their list of requirements, they don't want the tech support people to have to try to troubleshoot. There are similar requirements for the DW4020 and yet it is completely platform independent.

granny60, it would appear from the marketing literature that you can do just that, but I'd say all bets are off until it is an actual released product.

Is the idea with this product that you put a DSL/cable-type router in front of it to handle NAT, DHCP, port forwarding, DMZ, whatever? Or are they trying to handle all that in the DW6000 like the 4020?

BC, I think you're trying to cross the NDA line with that one.

Well, ok, but since I haven't signed an NDA, there is no "line" for me - only for someone under NDA who might be tempted to answer. But I can't imagine there are many taboo topics considering the amount of detail contained in P-10's document above.

Just passing thru

@direcpc.com
FYI a Google search turned up this link »www.shns.com.cn/800/shns7-8.htm, for a Direcway DW6040 unit. Using Google translation was not of much benefit.

Not that I have any real information on this, but extrapolating from the pdf file and the statement that home networking equipment may be required and is "not included" with your DirecWay system, I'd guess that's exactly what they expect you to do.

Just a Note to you all, I have been working with my Direcway installer and he just got back from the DW6000 training and said that the system box cannot be just upgraded the WHOLE system components are NEW. So sorry older system(s) must buy all new.... But, there seems to be a rumer that if you system is under warrenty they might ( if system dies ) replace it with the DW6000 system.. Per install From training class..

Another good reason to lock threads concerning beta test products under NDA's is that some fairly wild rumors inevitably get started that sound feasible. Without going into any specifics as to why I might think so, lets just say this smells of serious misinformation.

Your point is correct and noteworthy. But I'd prefer to leave it be, as even the wild rumors allow us to know that something is going on. And sorting fact from nonsense is just all in a days work on the Internet. So nothing is really different.

Obviously, I am leaving it be. Separating fact from nonsense should be a bit easier here, than say on usenet, IMHO. To that end, we do try to prevent complete nonsense from spreading where possible.

My point is that we are placed in a precarious position with unreleased products when those with real answers have either agreed to NDA's or are insiders who must be concerned with job security. The void is often filled with nonsense created from third a fourth hand accounts. Where we can bury the nonsense we will. That's all in a day's work at BBR.

So, the word is that even though I installed 2 months ago I'm screwed for upgrading. I so want to ditch the PC I bought for it, the system barely seems to work for me. I thought it was funny that Mac OS 10.0 isn't allowed, even though it should just require the ability to run the network.

Understand it like this. OS 10.0 was more or less a Beta Version with lots of bugs to be worked out. The final version of Jaguar 10.2.6, or 10.2.8, which just was released, should work just fine.
We will have to wait and see, if there are upgrades available.
It's a little like buying a new computer. You can't decide for a long time what to buy, then you buy it, and a day later they release just the model you always wished for. :-(

Yeah, I understand that's how it works, but usually you get some amount of price protection or the ability to have some benefit. it would be useful if they gave a timeline so you could decide.
