wouldn't it have been intelligent if earthlink explained how to remove the worm, how to prevent it from happening again and provided links to more information on the matter??
They did exactly that in the email I got.

... and while, ultimately, it's the user's responsibility to secure their own computer, I find it highly irresponsible of the ISP not to do some forewarning, especially in the current climate ... this 'firewall is the problem' attitude by so many ISP's and tech's has no doubt contributed to the rapid spread of the latest worms/virii ... something has to change, and FAST ...

fadort;
DirecWay has taken this action and the fact is, DirecWay has been telling its Satellite customers for as long as I've been on Satellite that we do not need a firewall on our systems.
I have called support about 6 times in two years and have been told that firewalls cause problems with their software and have been told to remove mine.
This type of advice is exactly why JJ and many others are now infected and being turned off by DirecWay.
Personally one of the big reasons home users get hit by crap like this is because of plainly ignorant advice by ISP support people.

"the computer keeps connecting to the internet to send email with out me doing anything"

I know most people in the forum like to use some sort of firewall and so recommend them. I do too especially to people who aren't up to securing themselves otherwise. But this isn't msblaster, it's likely SoBigF.

This guy has an email worm and he clearly needs an AV. A firewall alone won't clean up his machine and a reformat/reinstall won't address the problem which is apparently he doesn't know how to prevent and clean up after an email worm. He needs an AV to clean up his PC. Without it, a reformat/reinstall will only clean up his PC until the next time he opens some email and attachment.

And then if he's using OE6, use its settings to better secure it. One doesn't have to open every email attachment that one gets, even if it appears to be from someone you know. No doubt that's how many people get infected since these worms raid people's address books.

First welcome become a member and learn. An AV and to start a free firewall of your choice and try as many freebies as you want until you like one. Plus many ways to lock down windows itself.

Heck, Qwest blocked everything so I was safe. Another topic.

But you are looking for help good so ignore the everyone should know everything as you are now learning. The ones who just ignore and keep on as they are??

Plus if everyone knew computers then a lot of people would be out of work. LOL
