| QIC? WHAAAAAAA?
Lookee what I got from Insight today:
" Dear Customer:
Insightbb.com is excited to announce the release of a new software-healing agent called QIC. The purpose of this healing agent is to help troubleshoot and automatically fix many of the most common problems you may experience with your high speed Internet connection.
The Service Activator currently installed on your computer will be upgraded through an auto-update to include the advanced functionality that QIC offers. When the update is released in your area, you will be prompted to download and install the QIC Assistant. As with any software installation, it is recommended that all background programs be closed, including any virus protection or firewall software you may have. If you do not have the Service Activator you will not be prompted to download the QIC update at this time. You will receive a notification in the next few months on how to download the QIC Assistant software.
The QIC Assistant will allow you to view your system information and test your configuration to troubleshoot any problems you may have while using your Insightbb.com service. Having trouble getting your email? Can't reach the Internet? Need to reinstall your modem drivers? QIC can automatically fix many problems with the click of a button, if QIC is unable to fix the problem it will give you the details of the failure and offer further suggestions to resolve the problem.
The QIC Assistant will also offer to send the details of any problems found to our Technical Support specialists who can pick up where QIC left off to cut down on the amount of time you would have to spend on the phone troubleshooting your issue. The type of information QIC would send is what operating system you have, available RAM, available USB or Ethernet ports, primary email client, primary browser and the details of any problems found with your Insightbb.com Internet connection. Insight values your privacy and can assure you that no personal information is sent, nor will this information be shared with any third party vendors.
Insightbb.com is very pleased to bring the new functionality that QIC offers to your desktop and we look forward to better serving your broadband needs.
Thank You,
Insightbb.com"

| reply to Beer Nut The post that Carnival of Carnage posted up was the information I was looking for; basically if the software worked or hosed your connection. A lot of these "healing" applications put out by ISPs turn out to be a friggin' joke and screw up a user's connection even worse, kinda like the one that Charter puts out. I have friends that have tried the Charter "Pipeline Professor" that ended up having to reformat their hard drives because of the wonderful job it did to "heal" their connectivity issues. |

| reply to Beer Nut Beer Nut asked "So - QIC..........G-O-O-D OR C-R-A-P?"
Well, I won't install that CRAP. I manually configured to get my computer system to work with Insightbb. I hope you didn't use the Service Activator to setup your computer to work with Insightbb. It is far better to manually setup your system without taking a chance of having bloatware software messing up your computer.
That is just my opinion based on my experience with the old @Home Installation and Troubleshooting CD. It didn't install correctly, so the old Insight@home installer person just manually configured my computer. Then when @Home became Insightbb, I just used the manual install instructions instead of using the Service Activator.
You read Carnival of Carnage failed attempt at getting QIC Assistant software to work. So, that should be enough information to understand manual install is the way to go in setting up a computer to work with Insightbb.
Let me add I figure the Service Activator and the Qic Assistant software has been tested and setup to work with the most common computer system setups. However, there are so many different computers and setups, I figure the Insightbb software is bound to hose some systems while manually setting up a computer to work with Insightbb should work 99.9999% of the time. -- low cost and fast speed is what customers want in broadband |

| reply to Beer Nut I should have thought about this before posting that previous message.
ALL major ISPs (including Insightbb) have a policy set up that states that they will *NEVER* send out any software of any kind via Email. Email is way too insecure.
So if anyone that uses any of the major ISPs (InsightBB, Road-Runner, AOL, SBC/Yahoo! DSL, etc.) and gets an email from their ISP with an attached file *NEVER* open it, download it, or anything. If you have any questions about this please call your ISP. You can always email, but expect a wait for a wait for a response to your email. If there's a "live chat" available, please feel free to use that also.

| reply to IGGY "The Service Activator currently installed on your computer will be upgraded through an auto-update to include the advanced functionality that QIC offers."
Just a quick note to Insight this crap software was never, has never and hopefully will never have to be on my machine. So not sure why your email to me and others who haven't installed this "make things worse , AOL style ware" states that it is or has previously been installed on my machine.
"As with any software installation, it is recommended that all background programs be closed, including any virus protection or firewall software you may have."
I know this was debated in another thread. But honestly if I have to do this the software isn't worth having. And I can't fathom to think how many users would have problems shutting this type of software down. Can't even begin to tell you how many tech support calls in itself this action has the potential of bringing. And lets see = disable your firewall with all the worms that are going around recently that will infect you as soon as you do disable your protection? That is if your smart enough and wise enough to be running this type of protection in the 1st place. All around bad advice from Insight.
If you do follow this advice PLEASE disconnect from the internet before doing so!! Again if you follow the advice included within the email I just received and others have previously - DO NOT turn off your antivirus protection and firewall software UNTIL you are DISCONNECTED from the internet. RESTART your security software BEFORE trying to access the internet again!!
I'd bet the person or person(s) who came up with this brilliant ( NOT ) email are the same ones who complain the loudest when the network is slowed to a crawl by all the worm, trojan and virus traffic.
I know it was mentioned by someone that they are routinely told to disable such software to install software. Personally I rarely if ever install any type of software that tells me to do this. As I mentioned in the other thread 1 time in the past I'd say 2 actually maybe 3 or 4 years I've done this. That was to install a recent game beta.
In the case of the Insight software - it is from a trusted source and is ok to install without your protections present. But PLEASE do so NOT connected to the internet. I'd personally scan the exe file with an updated antivirus software before installing it though.
And as was mentioned in previous threads - this software ISN'T mandatory to install. Your connection will run fine - probably even better without this software installed. Personally I'd avoid it like the plague. I'd also bet money Insight will see the software causes more problems than it resolves. Educated users and fixing network problems - meaning spending real money were it counts - not developing some 1 fix for all software are what will decrease troubleshooting calls. Telling users to disable security software in this day and age will only cause more problems for the network and customers. Educated phone staff ( meaning not reading a script ) that have updated in real time network information would also save the company time, hassle and money. I can't count the times in the past I had to call and go through the whole routine when I knew for a fact the problem was on Insight's end. But the person on the phone swore there was no network maintenance going on etc - yet when I come in here and find exactly the opposite or in some other way be shown the "issue" wasn't on my end. I can't count the times in the past I've been proven right on this. Educated - kept in the loop phone staff would have helped to avoid a lot of frustration and also would save Insight money in less service calls to the home. Luckily network up time has been much better now and I've not had to deal with phone reps. But from what I've seen those that still do feel my past frustrations.
Telling users to disable security software in this day and age will only cause more problems for the network and customers.
For anyone who thinks I'm being alarmist in regards to infection if you drop your security software for even a few minutes while install this software - if still connected to the internet. Do some reading of the links here

I could keep posting links to related news forever - but that should get the point across.
Also a quick glance here
»Security
will also show why dropping your security software while connected to the net isn't a good idea at all.
Get ready for even more ICMP traffic if users follow the advice given within the email. As I said in the end this software is more trouble than it is worth. -- Test Your Security Team Z Member Cable Modem Diagnostics InsightBB 3000/384 XP PRO |

| reply to Beer Nut I don't recommend running the QIC software.
QIC seems to have messed up my XP system (have all patches, etc). Besides having my home page changed to www.insightbb.com and Internet Explorer re-branded by Inisightbb.com which is just annoying (Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by Inisghtbb.com), my anti-virus software and other services won't startup until QIC is "happy". And my IPSec-based VPN no longer works (even if connected through a different provider). Uninstalling doesn't help - I get the same behavior with my anti-virus software because I suspect the uninstall doesn't really uninstall everything.
Tech support wasn't able to help with any manual uninstall instructions. If anyone has analyzed what QIC does to your system, I would be interested so I can manually clean it out. Otherwise I am going to need to rebuild my system. |

| Go to MSCONFIG and simply uncheck REGCON to keep the QIC from running on boot. You can later run the QIC assistant if you want to check for updates or troubleshoot your Insightbb connection. The QIC is really a minimally intrusive program, I can see no reason why it would "mess up" your XP machine. |
