| reply to hobgoblin »www.adelphia.com/esafety/virus_alerts.cfm said by Adelphia website: Dear Adelphia High-Speed Internet Customer,
As you may be aware, Adelphia is currently in the process of taking steps to minimize the spread of a two new viruses, the.Nachi.A/Welchia Worm, a version of the original Blaster Worm attacking Microsoft operating systems and the Sobig.f virus, a mass-mailing type of virus that arrives as an e-mail attachment.
Special tools for removing the Nachi/Welchia worm from your PC can be found at the following links:
»us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.···ructions
»securityresponse.symantec.com/av···orm.html
»www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyse···hia.html
In order to prevent re-infection of your PC there are several actions that should be taken:
Install the patches released by Microsoft to repair the vulnerability. These patches can be found at: »windowsupdate.microsoft.com
Update your anti-virus software to the most up-to-date virus definitions
Install a firewall to help prevent unauthorized access to your PC
When activated the Sobig.f virus infects the PC and then e-mails itself to harvested addresses from the victim machine's address book. It does this using its own mail server that is part of the virus. When it sends out these e-mails it falsifies the "from:" field using one of the addresses harvested from the address book. This makes it appear that the virus was sent from someone else rather than the infected machine.
Further information on this virus can be found at the following links:
»us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.···me=sobig
»securityresponse.symantec.com/av···@mm.html
»www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyse···igf.html
Unfortunately, these viruses have impacted the Adelphia network significantly. You may be noticing slow speeds, regular disconnections or no connection at all. We are working to stabilize our network quickly and appreciate your patience while we do this.
In order to continue to stabilize our network, Adelphia will be taking additional measures that will impact a small group of Internet customers that use ping commands. Low-level pings (less than 100 bytes), DOS based commands used to determine Internet access in troubleshooting processes, will be blocked for an undetermined amount of time. If you use pings, you may not be able to ping anything outside the Adelphia network while this block is in place. This will not affect customers that do not use pings. As soon as the spread of the worm is under control and our network is stabilized, we will remove this block. We regret to have to put this block into effect but it is crucial to stabilizing the network and reducing the number if ICMP requests currently flooding our system due to the virus.
Please be assured that Adelphia is taking all possible measures to prevent the virus from impacting the Power Link network.
Thank you,
Adelphia Communications

| reply to hobgoblin The speed has been absolutely fine for me here in Ventura, California. Although I do notice that pings sometimes are not listed in game browsers now that they are temporarily blocking pings from outside the network. Some games like America's Army's in game browser can still ping however. |

| reply to hobgoblin This would not be an issue if people who choose to use MS OS, despite it's known security problems, would use even a tiny bit of common sense and not get infected.
Add to this, the fact that the virus got into the "wild" because a bunch of Windows users thought they could download a new porn picture from usenet, instead they downloaded the worm. Maybe they should grow up and find a real girlfriend, instead of sitting in their rooms fiddling with themselves.
Having a worm spread from your PC should be made a criminal offense. There is no reason anyone should have a worm on their computer, all it takes to avoid is a tiny bit of common sense.
But because a bunch of bozos can't find real girlfriends, we have to deal with hundreds of "you sent a virus" messages everyday, despite not even owning a windows PC.
Which brings up the bozo sys admins who send out these notices because they are too stupid to know the "from" header in the email is forged. [text was edited by author 2003-08-24 18:33:31] |

| I couldn't agree more with that last line.. Adelphia has sent me emails saying I have sent spam to someone.. NO WAY... I am alway up on virus definitions, have a firewall, turn off RPC, and even use.. ACK!! WindowsUpdate...... It's obvious someone has hacked them and their email lists because I'm getting spam that lists a LOT of @adelphia.net addresses in alphabetical order... |

| reply to hobgoblin It's people like Iago62 who, for some reason are Purposely not using the Windows Update, are part of the problem and causing all of these headaches.
You have a cable modem, there is no reason for you to not have auto updates turned on.
Sorry if I seem a bit harsh but this is a very sensitive subject for me as it has costed many many hours of work that otherwise would not be needed. |

Sigh. The Sobig virus spoofs return adresses. The automated rejection process rejects these messages to what it thinks is the return address. Please note the word automated.

Funny thing is the virus definitions from major companies (McAfee, Symantec) didn't detect SoBig.F the day it really came out and spread so quickly. Updates they caught SoBig.F weren't available until the next day. -- Adelphia - Is it working now? |

| reply to hobgoblin Any sys admin with half a brain DOES NOT send virus rejection notices to faked addresses. Any admin that doesn't know that sobig, as most of these viruses, fake the "from" address, should be serving fries, not running a server.
A sys admin that implements these notices should be held financially responsible for the garbage they send out.
Turn off the "you sent a virus" notices. I don't even own a window computer, yet I receive 100+ of these a day. [text was edited by author 2003-08-29 14:53:41] |

| reply to StopandGo So why don't YOU use filters or bounce to /dev/null?
As a sys admin of 10 servers and 150 desktops I've personally had thank you e-mails sent because of this very feature that let people know they were infected.
BTFW, virii hit you all at once, so statistically I'm currently receiving 1 virus that spoofs "from" and 9 others that don't. Somebody found out today that they are infected by the *garbage* I send out. I don't use windows either but I do have to protect my network from those who do! [text was edited by moderator] |
