| West Los Angeles frequent reboots
Had Powerlink since April (after waiting years for availability) and so far mostly doing well. Getting near-100% of rated 2k speed down and 256 up using the Terayon TJ-715. Outages here have been mercifully short--being near the backbone may help some.
However, recently a pesky problem has been more and more frequent. I am having to reboot the Terayon now several times a day--sometimes it seems, almost every hour. The connection to both internet, mail and news (in short, all services) simply stops at random. It may be during a period of idling or during surfing. And then the really weird bit: the three modem lights which are supposed to indicate a healthy connection stay lit. When I reboot it, all is back to normal, which is great. But that only lasts a while.
I'm getting suspicious (paranoid?) of things in Windows XP's event viewer like notices of my IP addy being lost, and seeing momentary loss/restoration of the LAN connection in the systray has me raising an eyebrow as well. I just took my first line test:
»/quality/nil/1129271
Everything looks OK I guess except that strange 100% loss to my first hop ping. Or do you see something I don't?
I use the latest free version of Zone Alarm, a RealTek 8139-derived NIC card and the aforementioned Terayon. As far as I know I am also virus and trojan-free.
Any advice would be appreciated. |

The momentary loss/restoration of LAN connection like that has frequently indicated a NIC card compatibility issue with XP. You might want to look for newer XP-compatible, signed drivers for the NIC, remove and reinstall the NIC in another slot, or possibly try another model of NIC.
The 100% loss isn't indicated in the traces the line quality test shows, so I'm not quite sure what is being pinged. But you just might want to turn off Zone Alarm or even remove it completely to see if it occurs then.
Other than that, the Terayon 715s are great modems and I wouldn't trade it for anything. -- Adelphia - Is it working now? [text was edited by author 2003-08-09 01:49:02] |

I updated the drivers just for the heck of it, even though the version number and date differential is virtually nil. The NIC drivers were built into Windows XP and the card seemed to be fine from my amateur perspective. It's a fairly common and recently manufactured card, the Realtek 8139 chipset used by D-Link is well known. Thanks for the suggestions. The new drivers are 'signed' by D-Link whereas the originals were Microsoft. Maybe it'll be the same deal as with my video card...built-in drivers just didn't cut it. XP is finicky about drivers, no doubt about that.

I always make sure the firewall is off for critical tests like that. Plus, I suppose I am ideally to get an 'average' of my line conditions by repeating the test, yes? |

| I live in West LA and had a problem that seems similar to yours. I am not a tech, but one of the things I found out was that Terayon caused a lot of problems with my system. The techs changed it to the SB4100 which greatly improved the situation. On their advice I got the new SB5100 which works great. You might want to get the SB5100 at Best Buy and give it a try. |

I will keep that in mind, thanks. People seem to be bitterly divided over the Terayons--some say they're the best out there and others say they're unreliable. I certainly wouldn't miss the rental fee...one thing I do attribute to it (perhaps unfairly) is my ability to get virtually 100% of my upload speed, FWIW. How are the up speeds with the 5100? |

| reply to atarnakh After the NIC card driver 'update' things seemed to get better. But yesterday I had the same mysterious reboot issue (just once) and a while ago the same LAN disconnection/reconnection happened momentarily, although cable connectivity continued after the events. Event viewer logged these:

So could it be the Terayon modem or something else? Speeds are consistent as always. |
