What do you guys recommend as the "best" browser in terms of security (least amount of flaws)? I'm on IE6 but I know there's better stuff out there...any suggestions? |

| If your major concern is 'security flaw's, but you are also interested in a fairly 'mainstream' browser that will do things in a manner in which you are somewhat familiar, I only have two recommendations: Netscape (still out there, even? hehe) or Mozilla (Basically the same thing, just without AOL's junk.. hehe)
There are others that are perfectly good alternatives I suppose, but I think Netscape/Mozilla is possibly the best thing for you. |

ActiveX has to be the worst thing Microsoft has ever supported.
Well, maybe not the worst. There was Microsoft Bob
But, back on topic. There aren't many choices other than IE - Mozilla/Firebird and Opera are the only ones that come to mind.
I've never used Opera, so I'll recommend Mozilla - it's stabler than its little brother Firebird and I can't think of any gaping security holes in it. Plus tabbed browsing is the bestest thing ever. |

IMO....a properly configured IE 6 cuts the mustard when it comes to MY Security expectations and browsing habits. -- Hatred causes destruction....Love causes construction |

| reply to BiG_Lou "Anything other than IE" I hear that! I totally agree with reaver221. Mozilla 1.4 final is the main browser that I use. I love it!!!
Moz/Firebird nightlies can be stable if you do some forum searching after about two days of the release. I found one from 6/11/2003 and it's been stable for me.
I have used a few versions of Opera and it's a good browser. I just prefer Mozilla. |

I'd have to agree myself... I've been using 6 for some time now, and not had any problems related to it. Of course, I took a good amount of time going one-by-one down the list of security options, and I am sure that I have other means of protecting myself that are working and updated as well.
But this 'security' thing is often just as much an issue of perception - nevermind that it's fairly easy to configure ANY browser on a Windows system to leave you open to some nasty surprises, many people just *think* that they are 'safer' if they aren't using Microsoft products. I know a gaggle of 'friends' who run Linux web servers that got crushed by a semi-recent Apache/mySQL thing that... well.. probably didn't learn the lesson.
The lesson being: No matter WHAT software you run, you have to work to keep it secure.
People who would like to engage in heckling should note that at no point in this post have I made a representation about the 'number of vulnerabilities' or how that relates to how often a person can expect to be 'attacked' or how 'vulnerable' their software is... and may also note that I've already replied to this thread at the top stating that I believe Mozilla is probably the best option. |

IMHO, you already ARE using the best browser, as long as you have it configured properly. I've tried Opera and hated it. I will never fall for the *hype* of a "better" browser again. -- SB2K »www.sarah-brightman.com |

What exactly is tabbed browsing? -- The views expressed in this post do not necessarily reflect the views of the poster. |

Tabbed browsing in Firebird with the Tabbrowser extension is great. You can duplicate tabs, undo tab closing, reload all tabs ... and so on. |

| reply to BiG_Lou Click image to enlarge Only used it for several days but I like the ability to easily customize the browser by adding or removing features. Seems faster than IE with the largest viewing area of any browser I have seen. |

| Thanks for posting the pic. I also like more viewing area. In IE I have one toolbar on top and that's it. Firebird looks like it can be fairly minimalistic too but ya still got two toolbars. Could you reduce that further to one toolbar if you wanted to? Just wondering. |

| You can customize it almost anyway you want I prefer having a safer browser that doesn't need a patch every 46 seconds to cover a new exploit the grouping in windows xp is great but do you really want that many browser windows open using more cpu compared to using a browser that has tabbing and a built in pop-up blocker,oh well..everyone has different tastes -- Let's do it the old Navy Way first man dead..Loses [text was edited by author 2003-07-25 03:04:33] |

| Regardless of what browser I use (IE, Avant, Opera) I always run Proxo. Takes care of more than pop ups and adds some features I like (like the super opener, for one example). I haven't tried Mozilla since 1.1 I think or Phoenix now Firebird. Perhaps I'll give 'em a spin too. |
