from the page linked by the words "overwhelmingly positive" in the story.

"Special devices safely bypass high voltage power lines and transformers to send Internet data into the home, according to Birnbaum. The information transfers take place at speeds of two to four megabytes, which is faster than DSL and most cable systems."

BPL is shared bandwidth so if you only have a few users it will be fast, when you have more users the bandwidth will drop. On a typical cable system one “channel” will provide ~30Mbits of bandwidth which is shared by the users on that particular cable drop.

Real world tests have shown BPL has a shared bandwidth of about 5Mbits for everyone on a particular 11,000 volt circuit which servers many more customers than a cable drop.

A cable system can easily add a second channel for another 30Mbits if needed, there is no such option for BPL.

DSL is not shared so all of the bandwidth is yours.

Aggregate, meaning shared. Cable can easily do 30-40 shared. Some of the newer designs now can do more than that.

To clarify, cable can do about 30-40 megs down and 10 up.

BPL is suppose to be some where between DSL & CABLE speeds. But with not to many on it yet through put must be something else. If you know anyone in Washington DC area maybe they can give you some info. That's one of the test areas, I think one of the others is up in Main, and a third on the West cost. All testing being done by Local Power Utility, in those areas. There keeping the power levels low during the test phase to keep the interference levels to TV and Radio down. Don't know if you remember when CB radio was HOT and every body had one. And what it did to TV and Radio. Well that what BPL is going to be like if thay don't get the bugs now. You can get more info about BPL here'»www.arrl.org/news/features/2003/07/08/'

what do you think the difference is in the percentage of homes in the united states that cant get cable or dsl, and the percentage of homes in the united states without power lines? I'm sure it's a pretty big gap.. although not nearly as big as the gap between the percentage of people who want broadband, and people who are worried it will interfere with their radios.

Basically!

Alot of people cant get cable or DSL and they post here on dialup, I dont suppose they are running off of generators. PLB will be a great assest to even those that have options of DSL and cable for its cheap price.

This will bring down the high arse cable prices and provide further competition for DSL.

Well, with BPL people that cannot get cable or DSL probably will not benefit much either.

BPL is not simply going to be deployed everywhere, it will be deployed where it is profitable.

People are making a huge mistake by encouraging this technology in a false hope that it will probably serve them. Cable is the more likely solution and if you do not have it yet you probably will not get BPL either. I hear all these comments like "About time, I am going to get broadband" when it simply is not likely that you will by BPL. Think of all the phone companies that applied for many different things in many states to deploy DSL only to then deploy them in the more populated areas. What makes you think the power company is somehow different than the phone company?

BPL will be most profitable in places where DSL and or cable arent available. I live in a highly developed area and DSL isnt available to anyone. Its here, but the entire town is fiber so no one gets it. Cable is only marginally available, BPL would be a hit down here. It can sustain speeds over dirty power, and doesnt cost much to deploy the equipment. On top of that, one also has to concider the almost 3x cable rate vs. proposed BPL pricing.

It of course depends on where you are etc.etc. Everything has its critics, lets just wait and see on this one.

i am encouraging any form of broadband being developed that has a chance to get more people online. maybe bpl wont get out this way... maybe it will. either way i believe that there will be some new form of broadband in my area before the cable company or the phone company decide to come tis way.

I don't know how many more are going to be able to get on line if what I read about BPL is true. BPL is suppose to be setup on your Local power grid with a tie in at the transformer station for the internet hookup. Local power grids in the US are setup to handle 50 houses pre grid block then through step-down transformer “That’s that Big beer can looking thing on a pole at the end of your block"
From there it splits the 220 to 110 and cut into 4 homes pre transformer.

BPL cant got through a transformer. you need a BPL router to make the connections. So if you the 51 house on the block you cant get BPL until some give up their place or the Power company install extra BPL routers very expensive to do.

So I don’t see many getting BPL unless your way out in the sticks and can't get DLS or Cable. Then again ?

I guess the Power co will raise the prices of electrical service to help pay for BPL.

quote:
It works like this. The Internet and other services can run through fiber and connect to the Power lines through Couplers. The data travels through the copper, then bypasses the transformer that converts the high voltage to the household voltage we use for our lights and computers. Getting around that transformer was a major breakthrough.

BPL will make an impact in cities and rual areas alike.
