Pics of my office part 2

Just did a few upgrades...part 1 is here.

P0000400.jpg - New rack layout. We de-commissioned our stackable Intel switches and moved to a chassis Alcatel 7800 OmniSwitch. That rackmount Smart-UPS at the bottom of the rack powers the 4 switches, firebox and 2 routers...the alcatel gets its own UPS.

P0000401.jpg - Cisco eat this Those 4 2 slot gigabit cards will be replaced with 12-port high density cards soon

P0000402.jpg - Other half of our rack, 2 Cisco 1700 routers, WatchGuard Firebox, Cisco 3550 switch, Netgear gigabit, and 2 of our old Intels (for testing/backup purposes)

P000041.jpg - Behind the rack...more drops being added. To the left is the backend of the alcatel. Behind the switch (not visible is its UPS)

P0000504.jpg - 2 Netware 5.1 servers. Next to the desk is "Neo" an APC Matrix UPS 5000 with 2 Smart-Cell Battery packs...Estimated possible runtime of 15 hours on the batteries.

P000041 (6).jpg - Neo's backend. We have 2 more Matrix UPS 5000, Trinity and Morpheous. One for the alcatel and another one for more servers we plan on hooking up. Our electrician warned us, anymore power and our office would need it's own transformer installed!

P0000405.jpg - Our testing spot/storage/graveyard. New PC, servers built and tested here before we roll them out.

P0000406.jpg - 2 new Dell Poweredge 2650, dual xeon with 4 gigs of ECC mem each. We're clustering 2 win2k advanced servers for one of our applications. That bigger box in front of the servers is a Powervault 220S which is our SAN

P000041 (5).jpg - Closeup of servers

P000041 (4).jpg - Holding 9 Fujitsu 36 gig 15 thousand rpm drives.

P000041 (3).jpg - Telephone PBX. Not sure but I think we have 4 T1 circuits going into this thing just for voice.

Re: Pics of my office part 2

Excellent network setup. Very clean - among the cleanest I've seen on this forum. It is not an easy thing to get dozens or hundreds of cables neatly cinched and dressed.

Now if you can just get your work to get you a cabinet for your servers you can get rid of the baker's rack. I hate baker's racks! If they can afford to drop the coinage on the 2650 and the SAN, they can probably afford a decent cabinet. You could also look at APC's 4-post open rack, which is considerably cheaper than a cabinet (about $400 last I looked) and can capacitate deep rackmount hardware like the 2650. Homaco also makes something, but I don't think it's as deep. In any case, it would suit the environment better than baker's rack. My $0.02 anyway.

You're telling me....about a day so far I've spent in front and behind that rack just dealing with cables, punching down new drops and organizing them.

Ahh...check out part one. I didn't bother posting that because we haven't changed it much...when we add our new servers, I'll post an update.

OMG DROOL over that Dell SAN!!!!

GIMMIE more Dell. Heh im a bit of a dell fan

Got enough power going into that alcatel switch ?

Either way VERY nice setup man. VERY nice. I wish i worked where you do. I'd be in heaven. Big network, nice dell servers. Its all there. Actually I wish I could say I worked at all :-P

Once again, good stuff.

BTW, what are those blue looking squares on the front of the 2650's ? Just to the right and down a bit from the Dell logo. Almost looks like a small TFT or something showing processor load.

Front mounted LCD alphanumeric display which shows error messages and codes and illuminates different colors to indicate system status. I think its a pretty cool thing to have when you are running a "lights out" operation.

So far so good...it does NAT for our entire office. The real test is when we start hanging servers off the DMZ port and applying more rigid filtering policies. It also has the capability to deny/permit certain users internet/DMZ access based on their NT/2000 or LDAP group membership.

Nah thats are "dialer server". This server keeps records of all calls made by our staff and maintains their telephone accounts. Its win2k pro and works in conjunction with our PBX. Our netware (version 5.1) servers are in pic P0000504.jpg That old PC next to the 2 Netware servers is our HVAC server...it talks to the thermostats and from this we set the temperature and zones.

What model WatchGuard Firebox is that? Does it have two wan ports for your two routers?

Its a watchguard firebox 1000. It has 3 ports, one for wan, lan and dmz. We only have one data T1. We have a second router as a hot standby, it only gets used if the primary router fails.

hey summoner-
thats a really nice setup. You seem to be a Novell expert so I have a quick question for you....

Can I install Netware 6.0 on an AMD Athlon system?...I have heard that Netware does not like not Intel machines.

Thanks you for help.

Netware likes either chip, Intel or AMD. My NW6 server at home runs just fine on a P2-450.

Run with 512 megs minimum, especially if you want to turn on every service and load every .nlm. My server at home has 320 megs (looking for a cheap stick of 512 pc133 if anyone wants to sell ) and my available memory floats anywhere from 20-35% free, so the server chokes at times. This is default installation plus routing, dns, dhcp, ndps printing and timesync loaded so it swaps to disk and slows down when a few people hit it all at once with file requests. Netware isn't a processor intensive OS but it loves memory.

Thanks for your help
I am interested in setting up a NW6 server at home because I already have a Win2k Server I would like to learn more about NetWare. Do you have any recomendations for setting up NetWare6 on a home LAN. Anything that comes to mind would be helpful

Thank you

Re: Pics of my office part 2

Install it, play around with the server...practice creating different accounts with different rights. Get yourself a book which will help alot. Look for a CNA (certified novell administrator) book which is novell's entry-level certificate. NW6 management is very slick compared to previous versions...its all done on a web page or through a java app called ConsoleOne. If you have any specific questions click on my name, scroll down and from there you can e-mail me.

Hi-
I am setting up NetWare 6 ask I write this post but I have a few questions...

1) Is there a website that can give me a basic tutorial in creating novell login scripts (Map Drives and printers)?

2) Is there a website that can explain NetWare file permissions to me? I am a little confused about how to set them up.

Thank you!

Login scripts are explained here. »www.novell.com/documentation/lg/···dex.html

Netware file permissions are also referred to as Trustee Assignments (think of it this way...the server trusts this user/group etc... with these rights) This is a good page »www.uvm.edu/cit/eLAN/trustee-pri···?tp=true

You can also search Novell's knowledgebase at »support.novell.com/search/kb_index.jsp I also highly recommend getting a book. It will make it alot easier to have the facts/answers in front of you rather than always searching for them.

thank you once again for the information it was very helpful however I have one more question...

when I install NetWare 6 I get the following error right after I create the sys volume:

"failed to create system volume nwconfig 6-59"

I have tried doing the express install and accepting all defaults and running the custom install and changing the SYS volume size. I have no idea what this error means.

Any ideas would be helpful
-Thank you very much

So i have my server all setup everything seems to running well but of course I have a question...

I read the page about scripts and a created the following script

map S16:=K:=HOME:USERNAME

HOME is the vol name and USERNAME would be the users directory

This script only maps to the root of volume but I want to map directly to the users directory.

Thank you for all your help I really appreciate it!

Heh we should have a netware forum for stuff like this. Seriously since this is a broadband pics forum, e-mail me in the future summoner@optonline.net. Ok that script is somewhat wrong. You can map either a search drive or plain network drive. I beleive you can assign a drive letter to a plain drive, but not to a search drive. The search drive will be mapped according to what drive letters are unused on the workstation although there are ways to force a search drive letter. The command would be MAP K:=%FILE_SERVER\SYS:USERS\%LOGIN_NAME Notice the use of variables, you can give to a bunch of users the same script and user alex will get a mapping pointing to k:\users\alex and sam will get k:\users\sam. The %fileserver variable also can do this, depending on which server the users login to the network. Search drives are used just like a folder you would place in the dos path directory. Like PATH=c:\windows\command MAP s16:=sys:public. It puts the network drive in the dos path. A plain network mapping is good enough to access your files etc...

You can also set the Home dir on the Environment tab:

Volume:You_Server_sys.your_context
Path: \username

Thats how i did it on my office and home.

Re: Pics of my office part 2

Welcome to BroadBandReports and good job on the wiring...structured cabling looks so good when you take the time to do it right. Unless you have some immediate upgrades planned, you should invest in some filler panels to cover up those empty spots in your rack. Always helps the "ohh and ahh" factor when management tours the new datacenter and its time to ask for a budget increase. What kind of infrastructure is in those racks?

Those racks will be completely full in the next month or so. We're hardcore:) We run as pure a Novell enviroment as possible, with all Netware 6 servers (and some BETA NW 6.5 servers) as well as GroupWise 6.5 and GWAVA 2.5. In the racks you see some data and voice cabling as well as a Nortel BCM 2.5 to the left (the white units in the left rack) as well as an Extreme Alpine 3808 in the right rack. If you want hardcore networking switches, buy Extreme. We also run some intense ZenWorks for Desktops 4.0.1b configurations as well as much much more! Thanks for the OOHS and AHHS! As you all know wiring takes more than time and patience, it also deprives you of your natural hair color and several pints of blood.

The white equipment on the right rack is brand new Panasonic web enabled video surveillance hardware. Above those is a Cisco Router and Firewall and below the Extreme behemoth is a few hundred pounds of batteries that keep the whole thing up during outages. Each cabinet has doors that lock with Plexiglas fronts as well as fans in the top to increase airflow and prevent dust buildup. The cabinet to the right of these two has a few servers and a rack mounted monitor and keyboard.
