Re: Fry's electronics in WA?

I walk by the store every day during my lunch break. I can't wait for it to open up. I'm imagining all these orphaned Fry's shopping carts in front of the building I work in after the store has opened.

Okay, time for me to start mapping out this trip. I'm going south on 405 toward Renton. What exit do I take? What lane do I need to be in? How do I get there? I can get lost three miles from home, so you gotta' help me here. I need foolproof directions.

If you are going south on 405 you will see it off to your right. Just take the next exit.

I went INSIDE the building today! It was a glorious sight, so much BROWN everywhere!

I was given a job application by a guy named Nathan Hale, which I will turn in tomorrow, since I REALLY REALLY REALLY wanna work there!

I figure I'm going to be spending a lot of time there anyways, may as well get paid. Wish me luck!

Good luck...if you happen to get employed do we get a discount.

Hmm...sortofageek and me were thinking along the same lines.

A friend of mine worked at the Frys in Sunnyvale, CA several years ago. You frequently did not get discounts on stuff as an employee, or at least not a very large one. Some of the stuff is sold at a loss, so the employee price is actually higher than the Joe-public price.

I wish the Frys was a little closer to me out in Kitsap county. Maybe they'll open one in Tacoma...

On my way through Renton today I stopped by to see where the Fry's is going to be located. And there were like a hundred cars parked out in front of their HUGE parking lot, a lot of people streaming in and out. Hurray!

Went to the front door, they're still not open yet, the people appear to be interviewing for jobs. Man, I was psyched out! hehe.

The front facade doesn't look extravagant as some of the other Fry's pics i've seen, it looks like a regular department store from the outside.

I just went thru an interview at Fry's in Renton. They have to be kidding!!!!! They want all employees to work 75 to 80 hours a week for 'at least the first 10 days'.

By the way they don't open till 'the end of the month' - that being August.

Every time I asked for specifics the interviewer either dodged the question or said there were lots of variables involved and that they change often, that she couldn't give me a straight answer because either she didn't know or couldn't say. I don't know if she knew anything really. I asked how much I can expect to make in commission each week and she couldn't give me any specifics until I pressured her and then she said that some make as much as $1000 and others even as high as $4000, but that you get a minimum wage to start and you get paid each week. I asked if they have annual raises and what percentage they were giving out and she said their is no policy for that nor that there were any regular reviews. This was the tone of the interview the whole 30 minutes or so that I was in the interview.

When I left I just thought to myself they have to be kidding. And when I got home I called them back and told them I was no longer interested. I've been out of work as a component engineer now some 2 years. I am anxious for a job, but not with a company that is as vague as Fry's. If they are that way in the interview - then I have to wonder what they are like with their customers. They even have on their application that you have to agree to 'unwritten rules'. What in the world is a 'unwritten rule'?

The location is very remote in my book. It's between the Boeing plant in Renton and I405 in a place that unless you are specifically going to go there - you have no other reason to go to that area. I asked when I was interviewed why they located there and they said that most of their stores are what are called destination stores. I get the distinct feeling they will last as long as the Silo stores did and then fail. They could have located in Southcenter's industrial park and had way more access traffic. I'll guess that their tomb like building will be their final Washington state burial location!

By the way they start everyone at their base rate of minimum wage of $7.01 an hour. During the interview I asked what their best salesman has done in terms of commissions for a week's time period or for a year's time period - something you think that any store would be happy to report - and I didn't get an answer. Sounds to me if you are looking for a place of work to invest your time in that the least they could do is tell you what a good investment in their store can do for you.

They said to draw business they will advertise a full page ad in the newspapers around the area every single day. I wish them luck. There are lots of other places to shop long before I would drive all the way out there. I am from Burien and Magnolias is closer as is Costco, Best Buy and others. Even Fred Meyer's is just up the street from me.

Thanks for listening.

Wow, Silo...there's a name I haven't heard in quite awhile.

I, too went through the preliminary interview process, though I did not last 30 minutes. As soon as the interviewer figured out that A) I was not interested in a sales job (I applied the day after the ad had come out about the computer technician jobs, and they had all been filled) and B) wasn't interested in taking a substantial pay cut just to work closer to home.

I will say, however, that the store is shaping up, it looks like a Fred Meyer's only with batteries and motherboards as far as the eye could see. It is nice to see a retail chain selling motherboards where there is just a trickle at CompUSA, and the local mom and pops are fairly expensive.

But I don't want to see old favorites stores like Compusave and the Microstandard strip in Bellevue go under...jobs at places like those are great to start a career at!

John ~ I seriously doubt that they will follow in Silo's footsteps. 90% of there stores are "destination" only stores. Off the beaten path and no other stores around. When I lived in CA there was one that you could see right off the freeway but you had to drive through a strange industrial park to get to it, but it was always jam packed full of people (sound familiar?). Fry's has been around for many years and everything that they do, including expansion, is very well planned and thought out.

I think they will attract a lot of people trying to find a deal (they do have good prices) and the geeks of the area, as they are the most comprehensive carrier of computer parts that I have seen in a retail store.

There's a lot of ex-Silicon Valley people in Seattle, many of whom are already familiar with Frys and are willing to go there, even if it's out of the way.

It's certainly out of my way, but I can hardly wait to have a store where they are likely to have what I want, unlike CompUSA. And I'm only sortofageek.

The store will have its grand opening labor day weekend, big huge ad will be displayed in the Seattle Times/PI the day before.

The store will have its soft, unannounced, opening that Wednesday (the 27th) and I highly recommend coming then instead of the mass of people coming that weekend.

I know this because I work there heh.

Are the Grand opening deals good that Wednesday? Grand openings usually have some great promo's/deals!
