Bit Torrent People getting busted.

Got this Email from yahoo groups.

So far, I've seen posts on two different forums I frequent from BT
users who, after downloading the current rip of "2 Fast 2 Furious",
have gotten a DCMA letter from the MPAA. The letters look like this
(various bits munged for privacy's sake):

Re: Unauthorized Use of Universal Motion Pictures
Notice ID: 542761
27 Jun 2003 00:46:56 GMT

Dear Sir or Madam:

Universal City Studios Productions LLLP and its affiliated companies
(collectively, "Universal") are the exclusive owners of copyrights in
many motion pictures, including the motion pictures listed below.

It has come to our attention that _____ is the service provider for
the IP address listed below, from which unauthorized copying and
distribution (downloading, uploading, file serving, file "swapping" or
other similar activities) of Universal?s motion picture(s) listed
below is taking place. We believe that the Internet access of the user
engaging in this infringement is provided by _____ or a downstream
service provider who purchases this connectivity from _____.

This unauthorized copying and distribution constitutes copyright
infringement under Section 106 of the U.S. Copyright Act . Depending
upon the type of service _____ is providing to this IP address, it may
have legal and/or equitable liability if it does not expeditiously
remove or disable access to the motion picture(s) li
sted below, or if it fails to implement a policy that provides for
termination of subscribers who are repeat infringers (see, 17 U.S.C.
§512).

Despite the above, Universal believes that the entire Internet
community benefits when these matters are resolved cooperatively. We
urge you to take immediate action to stop this infringing activity and
inform us of the results of your actions. We appreciate your efforts
toward this common goal.

The undersigned has a good faith belief that use of the motion
pictures in the manner described herein is not authorized by
Universal, its agent or the law. The information contained in this
notification is accurate. Under penalty of perjury, the undersigned is
authorized to act on behalf of Universal with respect to this matter.

Please be advised that this letter is not and is not intended to be a
complete statement of the facts or law as they may pertain to this
matter or of Universal's positions, rights or remedies, legal or equit
able, all of which are specifically reserved.

Very truly yours,

From the information gathered, it looks like there are MPAA people out
there using BT, connecting to torrents, and then finding the IP
addresses of the seeds/leechers and tossing DCMA letters at their ISPs.

You have been warned.

That's news. They'll bust anyone on anything. I pity the fool who thought Bittorrent was an exception.

That has to be one of the easiest programs to get caught on. I'm sure there will be many more where that came from.

People have been cought on BT before just like any P2P. When you download/upload such obvious commercial films like that(especially just released films!!) your chances of getting cought is 100 times greater(even though the chances are still slim when you consider the millions that have downloaded that film off of bit and any other p2p). Its like downloading a new crap britney spears album or eminem or any top 40 shit. Its what the MPAA or RIAA look for high on their list. Thats the chance you take if you want that commercial shit(especially NEW corporate crap releases).

NOBODY is going after me or anyone else downloading/uploading independent quality films or music or lesser known films or older films..its the commercial corporate basically newly released shit they are after. Its WHAT you upload/download on BIT/Emule(where you upload what you download at the same time) that matters big time.

B4 I use bittorrent, I check the IRC network and try to get the file from there. If the file isn't in the network, then I turn to Bittorrent. But as Storm says, I also don't download "famous" commericial files.

machina..you will basically not be bothered at all downloading/uploading on BIT/Emule: tv shows, porn, independent film, independent music, lesser known films, older films, older music, ect. Its not what they are after. Your chances increase 100 percent when you go for a "hulk" right now or any new EXTREMELY popular corporate just released media. That is TOP of their list.

It is why i always loved Emule/BIT in the first place..the vast array of "underground" film and music and older files that you would spend DAYS trying to find on IRC if they even had the file on the network which is usually highly doubtful.

I don't see how they can bust you if your just downloading.
I can see how if you share copyrighted material
they can catch you.

ummm that doesn't really answer it. As far as I know
the RIAA etc and companies like BayTSP look for people
who share copyrighted material---not download it.
