 End the USF?!?

I do not enjoy paying taxes, and do not know anyone who dose. I feel that the usf is out of date and has never worked like the fund was set up to do. This was a fund that was set up to help bring the services of high tech industries to the rural communities that often fail to get the access to the services that large cities enjoy. I do support the ideal that all people should have the ability to access high tech systems, and that some of my tax dollars go to this effort. I don’t agree with the notion that the monies got to Telco. I believe that the Telco’s have a bad record of not providing the service that this money is meant for. I live in a suburban community that was a rural area. Much of the services here were started as a co-op, a group of locals who were just trying to make there life better by providing electric power, phone, water, ect. If my tax dollars were going to fund these org.'s I would be happy, but when I find that my taxes go to companies like Qwest, MCI (formally WorldCom), and even Enron, who then proceed to steel more money from the public, that I will not stand for. If I knew that all $3.63 in new taxes, that this proposed tax would cost me, went to putting in new and advanced telecom's I would pay it. Until it dose I will fight it till I turn blue!

Even if the USF did do what it's supposed to do (which I agree isn't not) I am one who believes if you want beach front property, move to the beach. People moving to wherever they move are full aware of what services they can and can't get there. It's not up to Joe Taxpayer to turn some patch of desert into NYC.

These services, especially broadband, shouldn't be the next wave of entitlements under any circumstance.

Well that can go back and forth forever. Is it your opinion that no community should be brought water, electricity, phone, roads, or any other basic service that a corporation does not find it profitable to deploy at any cost that can be afforded? Looking at your posts I can say that seems to sum it up. That's fine. However I disagree, there are uses for such products, and things move from status of luxury to nessisty over time. There will no doubt be arguments over BB qualification for that status, but It will likely get there at some point in the near future.

For the record I am opposed to such a tax as well. As the previous poster points out, most of these corporate subsidy plans are a total waste. They go right down the toilet. Some 10 - 20 billion later we will see some half-assed, slow god awful service rolled out that any lean co-op could have done for 1/100th the cost with no or little tax assistance. However I do believe that as a country progresses it's not acceptable to leave the rural community out on it's ass because "they should all live in the city if they want anything".

These people do serve a purpose; even if it's just to provide you with a place to take a piss and eat a bite or two on your way between cities.

I don’t know who you're saying feels this way but it's not I. I do think that that is part of the life we have here in the states, where we few in the cities help out the many in the rural area, lest we forget where our food, clothing, ect comes from! If not for the rural area we would have no cities, no steel to make the building that the city slickers love so much! It is time for a great reckoning in this nation, time to wake up and smell the country.

I just believe that people know where they're moving...and just like I don't feel much sympathy for someone who moves next to an airport complaining about the noise, I don't feel much sympathy some someone who moves to the boonies and then complains that they can't (or more usually won't afford to) get state of the art services like coax or DSL broadband.

Should we have Federal supported MBZ and Jag dealers too since you can't get those services in the boonies? Where is an MBZ or Jag owner supposed to get service? Question is, where does it end? Water and electricity are a far cry from the luxury item that is broadband...and not just any broadband but particular types of broadband namely xDSL and Coax.

Move to where there aren't services...then you don't get the services. If broadband is a necessity...well like the person who avoids living near the airport, moves to a 'hood with better schools, lives close to parks and shopping, move to a place that offers what you're looking for.

So you're saying I should pay the USF on the off chance that some guy in an Iowa cornfield would develop cold fusion if he only has xDSl or coax broadband?

Thanks...that joke made my day.

We shall never come close to equal opportunities as long as we INSIST on giving our special opportunities to people based on race, gender, sex, age, or whatever...

By it's very nature creating a "special" program for only certain citizens crys out against the very idea of "Equal Opportunity"....

And who says you don't have the equal opportunity to move to a community that has telco facilities.
