Moving Out of SBC Area-Cancellation Fee?

I've been unexpectedly transfered to New Jersey, far out of SBC's territory, and I'm moving next month. I'm 9 months into a 12-month DSL contract. I know that when moving, SBC does not charge the $200 cancellation fee when they cannot provide DSL service. Does this also apply when moving outside their service area, where they obviously cannot provide service?

Thanks,

Rob

If you move out of the sbc serving area there is no cancellation fee.

Rob, if you move where SBC has local phone service and DSL is not available, there will be no termination fee (ETF).

If you move where SBC does not provide local phone service you WILL be charged the ETF.

There is alot of confusion on the ETF including SBC representatives. I ensure you that if you move out of the SBC local service area you will be charged.

Cancellation Fee?

Unfortunately yes the ETF will be charged to you. There are only a very few reasons where it would not be charged such as military service and a few others that I cant think of off the top of my head.

You can kind of think of it like a cell phone contract. If you get a cell phone for a contracted amount of time and move to an area that is not served by the company you still have to pay the ETF, or continue paying for the service. The only reason I say that is from my own experience with that type of move.

I wish you the best in your move, and if you like you can IM me and I'll take a look into it for you...

Thanks, all----I was afraid of this! Oh well, I can't help the unanticipated transfer.

I just hope that my new Sprint DSL service is as trouble-free as the SBC service has been.

Anonamoose---I'll IM you---thanks!

Just out of curiosity:

The guy's only got three months left. Do they at least cap the ETF at the cost of his remaining service? Otherwise he might be better off just letting it lapse (even though he's not using it). And that would be a bit silly if you ask me...

I don't think they cap it's just $200 period. I could be wrong. He could just pay the remaining three months and it would be cheaper like you are saying.

Will they let me continue to pay my monthly $29.95, even though the telephone line is disconnected? I don't think they offer credit card billing for DSL anymore, but I may be wrong.

I will only have about 3-4 months left on the contract, so this approach is certainly cheaper than the $200, but I'm not sure it will work.

rob,

I am not a 100% sure Beatmeup See Profile or Annonamoose See Profile should be able to tell us.

If you're getting transferred bill the ETF to your company!

Billing it to them is one thing, getting them to pay it is quite another.

Rob - if your dial tone gets disconnected, your DSL will be disconnected automatically, when this happens SBC does not have a way to bill you monthly, therefore the ETF gets charged on the final bill. You can certainly talk with the billing reps and see if they can work something out for you, if your company did force the move I would consider reimbursement for the charges. Actually, you shouldn't be billed.

This is the latest TOS:Contacts to Terminate Service:

For SBC Yahoo! Dial subscribers: 1-866-SBC-DIAL (1-866-722-3425)
For SBC Yahoo! DSL subscribers: 1-877-SBC-DSL5 (1-877-722-3755)

Termination Due to Loss of Line Sharing. The following terms apply to SBC Yahoo! DSL:

(a) DSL Transport Provided by SBC affiliate. Service is offered by SBC Yahoo! DSL transport services using a line sharing arrangement over a retail telephone line provided by an SBC Telephone Company. If you change your provider of telephone service on the line that is used to provide the Service, add a feature or functionality to the line or on the line that is incompatible with the provision of DSL transport service on the line, or you terminate the telephone line, DSL transport services will no longer be provided and the Service will be discontinued. Is such event, TOS will automatically terminate and any applicable Termination Charges will apply. SBC Yahoo! is under no obligation to request a new line or to arrange for the line to be conditioned to support the DSL transport service.

(b) DSL Transport Provided by Other Carriers. Some SBC Yahoo! DSL Service may be provided by other companies. In such event, SBC and Yahoo! remain responsible for providing the Service to you. If you change your provider of telephone service so that an SBC Telephone Company is no longer providing you any service, these TOS for SDSL or IDSL Service will terminate at SBC Yahoo!'s option and Termination Charges will apply.

I would recommend calling in and discussing this with a rep. As far as I knew up to now, if you moved to an area where SBC was unable to provide you with DSL service, there was no Termination fee charged.
