| BellSouth Rolling Out New DSL Services
On the weekend of June 28th BellSouth will roll out a number of new features for their DSL service including the launch of their DSL Lite program geared towards dial-up converts. If this information has been reported previously forgive me. I did a quick search and didn't see it.
1. DSL Lite The DSL Lite product will be $10 less than the FastAccess product. When downgrading to the Lite platform you will be limited to 256K downstream and 128K upstream. Obviously they are trying to convert would-be 56k users by knocking the price down a bit. The package includes 5 emails boxes with a 10mb quota a piece an 10mb of web hosting space.
2. FastAccess DSL The FastAccess product will get a small upgrade. Unfortunately speed is not one of them. FA DSL customers will now get 8 email boxes and a 25mb quota per box. The price for the new FA DSL package will NOT change and all current FA DSL customers will be upgraded automatically unless they opt to downgrade to DSL Lite.
3. Affordable Static IPs Residential users will now be able to order static IPs for the cost of $14.95 a month. This option is only available to PPPoX customers. Bridged customers are out of luck. The static IP is actually delegated by the DHCP server so you can't simply set your TCP/IP settings to a static IP.
4. Remote Access, Firewall Monitoring and Parental Controls. These services will be available from $4.95 to $6.95 a month. You must also order two of them at a time. You can't simply choose to add one to your account. Support for these will be handled by the same company that handles support for the 2wire modems.
5. Online feature and account editing Customers will now be able to add services (such as static IPs) to their accounts online eliminating a call to the sales department.
Anyway, this is just the information I have available to me and I hope it benefits someone out there. |

This is all excellent news, but I really hate them forcing you to take two of those services just to get one. That just bites!!!
They know that most users will likely only want one of those services (for me it's remote access), but they force you to take two so that they can sell more. -- "Do, or Do not, there is no try!" Yoda |

  Take a closer look

| reply to erykw I want to state for the record that NONE of this is official and that erykw just joined yesterday with a fake location. The TSG and ASG always gave you a way to contact them and verify that they were in fact BellSouth. maybe this is one of the reasons BellSouth prohibits HelpDesk personnel from posting here. I'm not saying that he is right or wrong but that this with a grain of salt. |

| reply to erykw Another thing that gets me is the Roll out date. June 28th is a Saturday. What ISP makes any kind of changes like this on a Saturday?
Also, In the Past, Bellsouth usually Spams, er.. I mean emails out notifications to it's users about changes to the services. This date is less than 30days out and no "Official Notice" yet.
Not holding my breath on this on. Not unless we can get a member of the ASG team or possibly Shayne or Andy to pop in and confirm it.

| reply to erykw Once again, it was just the information I was given. I really could care less if anyone can confirm it now or not. They are coming regardless of when I joined and regardless of my "bogus" location. I suppose in the future I'll send things through the proper channels to avoid being attacked. It's a pity really, I was just trying to share. |

Looks like a lot of people have long since been stuck with that option but without the price break. Lots of crappy syncs at those speeds. At least now they can pay a little less. |

How about an option to increase the download and upload speeds?
Say 3.0 Mb down and 512 Kb up?
That would be something I'd be interested in.
Not more mailboxes, or Static IPs.
Or how about being able to send more than a 5 MB attachment?
Everyone knows email clients like Outlook and Outlook Express have the 'break apart' feature, but the user receiving the message only gets the message re-combined properly in about 5 out of 10 times. -- "When you set yourself on fire and aim for the sky, you hope to leave behind some sparks of heat and light ... | reply to erykw As it has been mentioned before. A better upload speed would be great.
1.5/384 is doable, so why not offer it? Or at least to customers 12k - 10k ft or less to the CO. -- If your having half as much fun as we are, then we are having twice as much fun than you are. Do the math Here! |

| Even though they will be offering lower speeds. how about those users that want higher download and upload speeds?
I mean I would love to have a 3.0/512 connection.. they got the technology already.. so what is stoping them ? the FCC? |
