Basically stay away from patch Q815021, that patch messes up everything. I installed this morning and restarted my pc and everything was freaking out. Since then I uninstalled it and put patch 811493 which works just fine.
Sorry to hear of your problem but it works fine on my system.

Just to clear up where I got this info. I subscribe to Microsoft Product Security Notification Service.

Info about this service is available here: »www.microsoft.com/technet/securi···tify.asp

The information on new patches and updates arrives in my inbox via this service usually before it shows up on Windows Update. I like to download the patches first and install later when I am quite sure they pose no problems. This way I can archive them for later use also.

I had installed the original 811493 patch and experienced the problems discussed in the link I have posted above. I then uninstalled the patch. Problem solved.

The updated 811493 patch is not showing up in Windows Update on my XP SP1 machine either. This is normal and am sure it will be there in couple days time.

I sure would like to get some specifics. More detail than "everything was freaking out". I've just finished installing it on this sytem and so far I don't see any obvious problems. What should I be looking for?

This morning I came to my pc and in tools, clicked windows update. Once updated successfully I restarted my computer and walla my Symantec products didn't work and along with a few other programs to boot. So I did a system restore, got everything back as usual. Then I read this thread from Unhygienix stating the 811493 patch was available and downloaded it and it worked fine. So I was just sitting here and wondering what if I just download Q815021 one more time will it work. So I did and everything is fine. I was a bit scared, but I'm over it now.

Well it does seem to be okay on this HP machine I'm working on. Atleast it's not any slower then it was...lol. I never knew a 1.8ghz machine could be so slow. Corel and it's bloody always run crud.

edit: I'm back on my own machine now, it doesn't seem to slow it down at all. Things are nice and silky anyway, but I'm leary of installing this patches. I still haven't figured out what one was the one that made my machine turn into a jumpy jitter bug. It wasn't 811493, tho it did cause it's own problems. Regardless...the hunt continues...

I just installed both 811493 and Q815021 and my system seems to be running quicker for me. I created a restore point just incase, but so far things are looking good for me.

What is the number of the update that hosed 600,000 pc users internet connection?
I believe 811493 slowed a lot of people’s pc to a crawl but I’m not to sure about hosing their internet connections. 811493 is not out yet in Windows Automatic Update.

-------------------------------------------
That's why sensationalism works. That article referred to 600,000 downloads of the update, not 600,000 hosed computers. We need to read what we see not allow ourselves to be misled buy tabloid headline journalism.
I have never had a problem with any updates (Win XP). But I also keep all programs and drivers updated, including latest Nvidea driver windows update complains about.
I personally don't like Symantec products, so no problem there.

Just did a Windows update and both patches appear under “Critical Updates And Service Packs” now. The First one reads ….. 811493: Security Update (Windows XP) 3.2 MB. The Second one reads ……. Q815021 XP: Security Update 525 KB

I think I’ll install both patches tomorrow after I check back here one more time to see if anyone is having issues with either of these patches. So far it looks as if there are no major problems in this thread yet, even some systems being liberated.

I just installed them both with no ill effects. Some things actually seem a bit quicker.

EDIT:

So far, so good:) No change in performance has occurred.

Yeah, I wasn't sure if it was just me or not. But things "seem" a little more responsive.

Automatic update? Holding off on security updates? Creating restore points? Man! There sure are a bunch of people who obviously don't know what they're doing on here!!

This is a release from MS about 811493

"Why has Microsoft reissued this bulletin?

Subsequent to the release of this bulletin and the associated patches, a performance related problem was identified with the Windows XP Service Pack 1 version of the patch. This problem is unrelated to the security vulnerability discussed in this bulletin, however the problem has caused some customers to notice performance degradation on Windows XP SP1 systems after applying the patch.

Microsoft has corrected this problem and re-issued this bulletin on May 28, 2003 to advise on the availability of a revised patch for Windows XP Service Pack 1."
