| Updated 811493 Patch Anyone touched this "gem" yet. The original patch drastically slowed my machine and is well documented here in the forums. Wondering if anyone has tried the updated version of the patch?

Windows Automatic update has been quiet ever since Microsoft botched patch 811493. However, Windows Update came a knockin with patch Q815021 today. After reading subzeros post I think I will hold off until I see some more feed back.
Anyone else here have the same experience as subzero?
As far as 811493 goes I think Ill wait until Microsoft adds it to the Windows Update line-up and watch the feedback here in the meantime.

| Re: Updated 811493 Patch This morning I came to my pc and in tools, clicked windows update. Once updated successfully I restarted my computer and walla my Symantec products didn't work and along with a few other programs to boot. So I did a system restore, got everything back as usual. Then I read this thread from Unhygienix stating the 811493 patch was available and downloaded it and it worked fine. So I was just sitting here and wondering what if I just download Q815021 one more time will it work. So I did and everything is fine. I was a bit scared, but I'm over it now. | |

This particular patch (Q815021) has been mentioned several times here. Just want to clarify: Q815021 is only applicable on XP if one is running IIS? Otherwise I can ignore this patch, right? or should I?
Edit: After the bad experience with original Q811493, I'm happy to report that the updated patch (5/28/03) installed quietly with no side effects. Whew! [text was edited by author 2003-05-29 23:52:45]

from what I gather, this patch does not apply to Home users unless you have manually added IIS which doesn't install with XP Home in its default setup. So I'll pass on Q815021... -- "in flagrante delicto"

I read that post here also subzero. I created restore points before I installed that patch. So far so good.

I booted-up my XP laptop just over an hour a go and Windows Update has patch Q815021 as an Security update, listed under Critical Updates and Service Packs. This is why Windows Update came a knockin. Is your patch listed under Recommended Up-dates?

| Re: Updated 811493 Patch Just a heads up. I just downloaded Q815021 and it seems to be working without any issues. Just so you know I downloaed it this morning and messed up some of my programs. So what I did was install patch 811493 1st after doing a restore and removing Q815021. So I thought I'd give it another chance and my system came back as normal. Just thought I'd let everyone know. | |

| Ha...I just got the same knock on my door for Q815021. There is another thread going that says that paticular update is a recommended update not a critical one. What is the number of the update that hosed 600,000 pc users internet connection? Maybe we should start one thread that keeps all these updates straight so we don't have to surf around and find the facts on differant threads.
Theres the one you are talking about...Q815021 that subzero says messes things up. Then there is the update that MS pulled...818043 that messed with Norton. Then there is the new revised 811493 that is supposed to be safe to load now? Boy....scary.....Keizer

| Just to clear up where I got this info. I subscribe to Microsoft Product Security Notification Service.
Info about this service is available here: »www.microsoft.com/technet/securi···tify.asp
The information on new patches and updates arrives in my inbox via this service usually before it shows up on Windows Update. I like to download the patches first and install later when I am quite sure they pose no problems. This way I can archive them for later use also.
I had installed the original 811493 patch and experienced the problems discussed in the link I have posted above. I then uninstalled the patch. Problem solved.
The updated 811493 patch is not showing up in Windows Update on my XP SP1 machine either. This is normal and am sure it will be there in couple days time. -- Go Leafs Go

| Just did a Windows update and both patches appear under Critical Updates And Service Packs now. The First one reads
.. 811493: Security Update (Windows XP) 3.2 MB. The Second one reads
. Q815021 XP: Security Update 525 KB
I think Ill install both patches tomorrow after I check back here one more time to see if anyone is having issues with either of these patches. So far it looks as if there are no major problems in this thread yet, even some systems being liberated.

| Got home from work last night and kicked my friend off my computer for about 30 seconds when I saw the windows update icon in my system tray. It had 2 critical updates listed which I installed. I don't know the numbers but they both said they were security updates. After they were done I did not reboot. I run a server so I only reboot when 100% necessary and in the middle of the night. Anyhow, haven't noticed any issues so far. Haven't tried any of my Norton products either. Also didn't run the full Windows update to check for normal updates listed. -- Today I didn't even have to use my AK, I gotta say it was a good day. - Ice Cube www.maxolasersquad.com | |
