Updated 811493 Patch

Anyone touched this "gem" yet. The original patch drastically slowed my machine and is well documented here in the forums. Wondering if anyone has tried the updated version of the patch?

I just had troubles with Q815021 XP: Security Update. I had to uninstall it. It gave my Symantec products some issues. And also other programs I have wouldn't work. I'm wondering when Microsoft or Symantec will have a fix.

Ohh so you want to know about those that took the plunge first?

I never d/l it on any of my comps because I heard about a possible problem with it from this site, and I was not willing..nor felt it necessary, to take the risk.

After all that's one of the reasons to frequent a forum like this.

I read that post here also subzero. I created restore points before I installed that patch. So far so good.

As far as the 811493 fiasco... I create restore points before any patching takes place and I always visit here to see if the BBR folks (DSmithlady...hehe )are having problems with any MS patches or updates.

That's my point...visiting here first is a good idea

Basically stay away from patch Q815021, that patch messes up everything. I installed this morning and restarted my pc and everything was freaking out. Since then I uninstalled it and put patch 811493 which works just fine.

For those that downloaded the original one..should we uninstall first before installing the new one? Or should it fix everything without having to uninstall?

Windows Automatic update has been quiet ever since Microsoft botched patch 811493. However, Windows Update came a knockin with patch Q815021 today. After reading subzero’s post I think I will hold off until I see some more feed back.

Anyone else here have the same experience as subzero?

As far as 811493 goes I think I’ll wait until Microsoft adds it to the Windows Update line-up and watch the feedback here in the meantime.

I thought Q815021 was a recommended update, not a critical update. So why would windows update "come a knockin" with that paticular patch? Keizer

I booted-up my XP laptop just over an hour a go and Windows Update has patch Q815021 as an Security update, listed under “Critical Updates and Service Packs”. This is why Windows Update came a knockin. Is your patch listed under “Recommended Up-dates”?

Ha...I just got the same knock on my door for Q815021. There is another thread going that says that paticular update is a recommended update not a critical one. What is the number of the update that hosed 600,000 pc users internet connection? Maybe we should start one thread that keeps all these updates straight so we don't have to surf around and find the facts on differant threads.

Theres the one you are talking about...Q815021 that subzero says messes things up. Then there is the update that MS pulled...818043 that messed with Norton. Then there is the new revised 811493 that is supposed to be safe to load now? Boy....scary.....Keizer

I believe 811493 slowed a lot of people’s pc to a crawl but I’m not to sure about hosing their internet connections. 811493 is not out yet in Windows Automatic Update.

After the big mess MS patch 811493 caused I’m a little gun shy! So I’m going to wait until it appears in Windows Update and watch the feed back here.

Matter of fact while reading this thread, this machine suffered thru a popup announcing Q815021 - I'm holding off for a few minutes. But I'm walking across the room to let it be installed on another similar machine and I'll see how it goes over there before letting it "work its magic" on this one. And yes - it announces as a security update.

I just made a restore point, then installed Q815021. No problems are apparent, yet.

Also, 811493 was not on my list. There was a critical update for Microsoft VM, but I don't use that so I removed it from my list.

Just a heads up. I just downloaded Q815021 and it seems to be working without any issues. Just so you know I downloaed it this morning and messed up some of my programs. So what I did was install patch 811493 1st after doing a restore and removing Q815021. So I thought I'd give it another chance and my system came back as normal. Just thought I'd let everyone know.
