Westell "modem browser"

Back when dinosaurs roamed the DSL prairie, and SBC provided Westell modems, we all were perplexed as to how to get line specs out of the Westell "516" Ameritech provided. We knew it could be done...just couldn't figure it out.

Well....if you still have one of these, see »:/forum/remark,6807090~root=ilec,vz in the Verizon forum. Seems that Westell finally let that line specs cat out of the bag.

* WARNING * : I have not tried this on my Westell nor do I know what else it will mess with. This should be considered totally experimental and if you knock yourself offline, screw up your computer or make yourself a nice Westell doorstop using this software do not go crying to SBC for help. You won't get any. If you do not know exactly what you are doing, and are prepared for the possible consequences of it going horribly wrong, DO NOT INSTALL OR USE THIS SOFTWARE.

But if you have a spare modem, and a spare computer, this could be a really neat diagnostic too. I plan on playing with this when I get back to the office this week.

Doc, I tried it and it works great.
The best part is that it is within +/- 5% of Sunrise readings I just took on my line.
They need to come up with something for the 5360's now.

These specs good or bad?
Edit - rebooted the modem and noticed noise margin increased for my downstream, is that normal?

Yep that might be normal... Been getting many storms in that area??

Sometimes depending on weather effects frequencies may become unavailable to the modem and dslam. Thus usually a re-sync can cause the modem and the dslam to test the frequencies to re-look at the line..

Sounds normal.

Utility found and flashed my 516 modem and I was able to connect to DSL, however only the 'Administration' tab shows on my PC :-(.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Edit: Nevermind, I found what was wrong.
CTRL-ALT-F7 is what the utility needed.

misiek: same thing here. It found the modem and updated the firmware. After that the browser popped up and only shows administration.

To give you all an interesting clue, that is about what I see on the dslam side...

Pretty damn similar...

Kind of wish I had one now...

Not clear on model.......
Is that model the Westel Wirespeed????

Also, was this through the Enternet software, (The way Efficient does it currently) or some other software?

Last question: Can it be 'gotten to' via Telnet? (I think I'm asking for way too much now!)

Thanks!

Anyone who has already installed this software care to post pictures of what info is provided under the other tabs? For example, is something like an attainable rate listed anywhere?

You can get the same readings on the Cayman/Netopia 3546.

That's all fine and dandy if you have a Cayman/Netopia 3546. Many of us oldtimers have a Westell 516 and it's nice to be able to talk to it, finally.

I was just funnin a bit. Didn't mean and harm. By the way, Westell has a new modem out, we are going to try them out in the Ohio region starting next week. I will post some results on the trials when I compile them.

Forgot to mention that firewall had to be disabled for the utility to work.
BTW, does anyone know what port type and number this thing uses? Would love to punch that port out wide open instead
