Someone told me that Adelphia will install a filter device if I order a cable modem w/o cable TV
This is true and should be what happens.

If you don't pay for TV service it will be filtered out before it gets to your home.

But isn't the reason Powerlink w/o cable costs more is because Adelphia realizes people are going to connect a TV to the line?

Actually its just a side effect of poor marketing to say "it costs more if you don't have other services".

Purchased "ala carte", individual services (i.e. Basic TV, Digital, and/or Power Link) are priced at a certain rate, but if purchased "bundled" you receive a discount. Hence the discounts when you purchase Power Link with Basic TV service or Power Link with Digital TV Service.

Its priced that way to encourage "bundling" of services because its cheaper to provide multiple services to a customer if Adelphia already has at least 1 service provided to that customer.

Adelphia doesn't "just charge more because they know customers are going to hook up a TV anyway". Since broadcasters providing programming access to Adelphia charge Adelphia depending on Adelphia's reported subscriber count, customers receiving TV broadcasts but not paying for them are ripping Adelphia off, who in turn is ripping off the broadcasters, because more subscribers are watching the service than Adelphia is reporting. So Adelphia has their techs install filters to block services customers are not paying for.

Mac:

I'm not sure I'd call this "poor marketing".

Its good basic marketing to reward customers who add additional services with lower overall rates. The incremental cost of adding additional services to existing customers is always lower than adding a new customer. Its all related to the revenue per customer.

I agree, its just that the reasoning behind it is explained poorly to most company reps or customers, which results in answers such as the one MaxPowers gave earlier.

It also results in confusing explainations of pricing and the feelings of paying more for less service when in fact its supposed to be "rewarding" customers who have more service by paying less for the bundle than they would it they purchased the services separately.

I don't work at Adelphia anymore. That was just for my own personal knowledge Thanks for clearing that up though as I never could get a straight answer regarding this when I was at Adelphia.

No problem, glad I could help. As I said, the concept is poorly explained to most company reps and customers when they ask.
