Re: New Modem W/ Adelphia

The biggest problem with provisioning is..

"What type of server am I connecting with for my boot or tftp process?".

If its a CNR server, it can be done on the phone. If its a hes1 setup.. it has to go thru a provisioning process.

Almost all the new servers and the rebuilds/buildouts are being done in the CNR fashion.

Before buying a modem, I would suggest doing an nslookup on your dhcp servers ip address and see what it tells you..

Examples: --->

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: cnr1.atlsfl.adelphia.net
Address: 68.66.159.234

[CNR/DHCP server for Atlantis Florida..]

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: hes1.bur.adelphia.net
Address: 24.48.243.201

[HES1 for Burlington VT.]

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: cnr1.bur.adelphia.net
Address: 68.168.96.168

[CNR Server for Burlington.. ( Hmm.. 2 servers.. intresting..... ]

Name: hes1.yumaaz.adelphia.net
Address: 24.51.240.34

[Hes1 Server for Yuma Arizona.]

------>

Both servers do the same job ( from the users perspective ) but the way in which things are provisioned are a bit different. The CNR servers are directly provisioned on. When someone calls in with a modem to be provisioned , the Tier2 ( or higher ) individual can log directly into the server and provision the modem. With the Hes1 servers, an application is used. Depending on the replication of the app, it can take a while for the provisioning file/info to hit the respected server, update its list of authorized mac-id's and allow your modem to be permitted for tftp.

Hope that explained it a bit.

Sincerely,
Jax
