| reply to Rxdoxx Just returned from Gabriel's Inn again for my wife's birthday dinner (reviewed here by RxDoxx). Ate French style again, and finished off all 6 or 7 courses in about 2 hours. The clock outside still says the same time as in the picture, except the hour hand has slipped a tad and now rests directly on the 7. When we left one of the peacocks was out of his pen walking around squawking.
Now to digest. zzzzzz........
I want to live at Gabriels Inn. -- just to clear things up |

| reply to madylarian madylarian asked: "So, any recommendations for a good Mexican restaurant?"
Well, there is always "Chi Chi's" Mexican restaurant, and they serve salsa and chips while you are waiting for your meal, they ask if you want mild, medium, or hot salsa, but if you like it really hot, then ask for the "extra hot" salsa, that will really open up your sinuses ! |

It seems there's a Hispanic restaurant in Fells Point, Latin Palace, on South Broadway.

| Tried Los Amigos. Real nice. 'Americanized' a little but far more authentic than the others I have tried. Got the mixed ceviche and the carnitas (tasted like 'Rican Pernil ) I have heard there is a great authentic one on Eastern avenue - highlandtown- across from the Walgreens. Gotta try that, been told they have Menudo and serve the pieces of corn tortillas with salsa verde next to the eggs.
Finally got the Firehouse Shrimp salad. Smaller, cheaper than Linwoods but much better. I will try other things from there, any super suggestions? -- A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold |

| There's one that used to be the old Madrid Restaurant on Eastern Avenue. It's now called Spanish Meson. I haven't been there in ages but I remember it being good. Also on Eastern Avenue there used to be this little hole-in-the-wall place called Las Taquitos or Lost Taquitos, not sure which. It was mostly a carry-out but it had a few tables. This really was authentic Hispanic food, not the usual tacos and burritos. Even the soft drinks came, for the most part, from Mexico. I don't know if they are still there. We stopped going because it was too far away for a carryout and not much of a place to eat in. However, the food was really good and there were often lines out the door waiting for the few tables inside.
To be honest, the only things I have had at the Firehouse have been the shrimp salad (most of the time), the burgers (huge and good), and the hot turkey sandwich (real mashed potatoes, not instant, the last time, though I have gotten instant in the past). At least their turkey gravy is not overloaded with cornstarch.
Also, if you are so inclined, the chicken noodle soup with matzoh balls at the Suburban House in Pikesville is the best I have ever had. Better than my grandmother used to make. That and a salad is a meal.
Edit: I just spoke to my husband who says that the Las Taquitos place is gone but there is another Mexican restaurant in it's place. However, it is NOT the same as Spanish Meson. Spanish Meson is a much larger and more upscale restaurant.

I just found out that this place is at the corner of Eastern and Haven, just west of the railroad bridge.

| Maybe that one on Eastern Ave is still too new to have been added to this list of mexican restaurants in Baltimore I found doing a search on the web, I found a link to a page that lists restaurants -

It is quite new. On the other hand, I hate to tell the creators of that list, but Casa Mia's is an Italian restaurant. We go to the one on York Road quite often.
Oh, and Eltaquido Mexiciano, 410) 563-7840, 1744 Eastern Ave., Baltimore, MD, is the little hole-in-the-wall place I mentioned earlier.

| reply to madylarian So I've lived in DC for two years now and have yet to do the MD crab thing (I know, I know), but this weekend the firm I am working for this summer is taking us sailing in Annapolis and we're to go to a restaurant called Cantler's Crab House. Anyone ever been there?
And how are MD crabs different from crabs everywhere else? I'm from Boston and grew up on crabs, and love them. I asked someone here and they said something about Old Bay Seasoning. Am I going to get incredibly messy eating these things and embarrass myself in front of my new potential bosses? |

| I've had blue crabs from MD and blue crabs from OBX, and I'd say MD crabs taste sweeter...maybe because the Chesapeake is brackish water, and not ocean salt water.
Old Bay is the staple seasoning to go on crabs around here. I love it, you may not and you'll definitely get a little messy with your hands, and maybe a on your shirt if you're not a carefuly picker...but there's no other way about it unless you get a crabcake.

| You know you are in a good crab place if all the tables are covered in newspaper, wooden mallets and you sit on long benches

| reply to madylarian We had crabs this weekend. Yummmmmmmm. But beware, they are pretty expensive this summer. And it's a good bet that a lot of them don't even come from the Bay, but from the Gulf. But here's everything you ever wanted to know about our crabs, hon: »www.blue-crab.org/ .
Also, while Old Bay is a staple, it is certainly not the only way steamed crabs are prepared. Some people swear by Wye River seasonings. (If you're on the way to OC look for their shop on Route 50 somewhere around Easton or Cambridge.) Others have their own secret recipe. I think Obrycki's uses a lot of black pepper. Rock salt is another ingredient. All of these are calculated to make you thirsty. Whatever libation you choose, get a pitcher!

| reply to melissa Your potential bosses know their stuff. Cantlers is the local secret. Not much more of an authentic crabhouse to be found around here. If you're there the right time of season and day, you can watch the watermen pull up to the dock and unload that day's catch. Even the drive down to Cantlers is rural - you'll wonder if it's the right road... Long tables, covered in brown paper, well-used mallets. Sit outside if you can! Just from what you're saying, these bosses are the good kind
But as Mady says, this year's crab harvest has been very bad - the Bay is being depleted for a variety of reasons. Most crabs this time of year are actually brought in from South Carolina and Louisiana. Some crab houses are even getting them flown in from Ecuador! But Cantlers may not stoop to that level - you should be able to get some authentic Md Blue Crab there. And yeah, they like Old Bay. It's kinda required around here (though there are alternatives - I prefer the Wye seasoning myself). And yes, you'll get messy. Trim those fingernails! Enjoy! | Another reason for less crabs - Rainfall! One thing that makes Maryland crabs "sweeter"/better is the water is brackish in the Bay. Not as heavy salt content as elsewhere. When there is a lot of rain (and we have had a ton of rain in the past months) the water run-off into the bay decreases the salinity and keeps the crabs from coming further north into the Bay. A bunch of other reasons can also be given, but Rainfall/salinity of the water is a big one. So unless we get an extended dry spell, the "local" crabs are going to come from elsewhere, at best Northern Virginia area where the ocean and bay have the higher salinity, at worst...brought in from far away. -- A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold |

| reply to KoolMoe Apparently we are going to sail right up to Cantler's, get off the boat, and go directly to the (outdoor) tables where the crabs and beer will be waiting for us. Yeah, they are pretty cool potential bosses. |
