| Power companies are a live and well
My little town owns all its utilities except gas, phone and cable. We own the power lines, the power plant, the fiber loop and everything else connected to power or water within our area and have for 150 years. The town offers dial-up and Wireless Broadband (1500/1500)thru the city utility. It isn't a bad deal. The rates are reasonable; the worst I can say is ATT has horrible routing and even worse latency. Why we are routed thru St. Louis (known ATT bottleneck) and Chicago when the closest POP is Dallas is not only stupid it adds ten hops to trace route.
The best reason to do this is to punish the states that did not agree to give SBC and ATT a free reign of terror, or a free ride.
