The power company wants the headache of being an ISP. I did some research into this, and the local power company where I live only wants to lease it's fiber to businesses. It has no plans to use it's power lines for Internet service. Other power companies may decide the same thing.
Keep in mind it isn't just a matter of plugging in the servers and the service is up and running. Additional (expensive) equipment is usually needed for the power companies to get this started. For the customers, the speeds are only 5 - 10 times faster than dial up. At least that was the result of the trial phase in Missouri. [text was edited by author 2003-04-08 10:03:53] |
