 [Cool!] COMCAST = HDTV!!!!!!!

Attention: those of you who have been converted to COMCAST.

I decided to call Comcast, thinking I might find out if/when they have plans to roll HDTV in my area, and at the worst be put on some waiting list.

Well.....

Turns out, as of 2 days ago, it is now available in Waltham, MA. I'm getting the new box installed Tuesday! If you just got switched over, call them and ask. Their website makes no mention of this.

The channels are:
2 Network Channels
HBO-HD
SHOWTIME-HD
HDNET

*does happy dance*

I've had an HDTV ready television for just about a year now and finally I will get it. (Satellite was out of the question, apartment.. trees... =P)

This is great news!! I bought an HDTV ready TV last year (Sony 57" Widescreen) and I couldn't convince my wife to cut down two of the many trees in our backyard to get satelite. I'm off to call ATT...err Comcast now.

Welcome Ironman8250,

You're lucky to be on the East Coast, Comcast's favored subscribers.

We, in the West Coast seem to be the red headed stepchildren of Comcast We may have the same digital converter box (DCT5100), but we're many months behind on getting the firmware & software updates. The number of HDTV channels is a dismal two (HBO hdtv & SHO hdtv). I thought HDnet was exclusive to satellite?

Here's some links for you:

That's yet to be confirmed, this is verbal information I was able to squeeze out of the telephone salesperson. I have not found any official channel listings yet. I guess I'll find out for sure on Tuesday

@attbi.com

There's good news and bad news about Comcast taking over. Comcast has pledged to spend $400 million in the Bay Area to upgrade the networks out here, to roll out HDTV, VOD and cable modem services out as soon as they can and as widely as they can. And for those parts of the Bay Area which already has upgraded infrastructure, they'd roll out new services like HDTV and VOD in 6 months. Of course, cable company timetables are notoriously overoptimistic.

The bad part is that Comcast is notorious in the cable industry for increasing revenues per subscriber. That means price increases -- how else are they going to justify the capital expenditures?

As for HDTV, only offering HBO and Showtime is not nearly enough. They have the bandwidth that satellite doesn't have. They need to have all local network affiliates which are broadcasting an HDTV signal, the PBS channel, the new ESPN HDTV offering and so on. There will also be a temptation to charge a premium since HDTV owners skew to a high demographic -- which is probably why they're offering premium channels, since that will require subscriptions to those premium channels.

Another factor in making HDTV viable is a good timeshifting solution. Their set top boxes must interoperate with an affordable and convenient recording solution. Because people are only going to forego the convenience of Tivos and VCRs for so long to get HDTV content. Better yet would be set top boxes with PVRs integrated or at least have those boxes be purchaseable by customers to avoid the monthly rentals.

Charter is one MSO to sign a distribution agreement with HDNet. Fort Worth, TX area if I'm not mistaken is their first rollout so it's quite possible Comcast is getting on board.

Cable is the THING

Satellite is limited.. in no way can Satellite ever offer as much services as cable does through their pipeline...

And Robert..

WHO DO I NEED TO BRIBE TO GET SOME SERVICE HERE?!?

The signs say Comcast, but I feel like the bastard kid. I've been dragged from TCI@Home, Excite@Home ... AT&T Broadband@homeless:( The caring & knowledgeable people at our Everett office seem to have been replaced with morons:(

The Comcast forum feels like I'm intruding on the territory of biological kids:( I think they're snobs and/or clueless:( No or little help. What good are they?!?

I've posted anon & member, but same "sucks to be you" feeling >>>--> »West Coast needs DCT5100 Software/Firmware Updates

I'll just stay here on this side, where this stepsubscriber feels comfortable.

What's with the picture of the cable box? Is that what we are supposed to have? I have this one, should I get them to come replace it? What Should I say to make them do it? I wonder if it would fix the ghosting I get on ABC and NBC.

Hi fingerprint,

I originally had (2)DCT2000, then subscribed for HDTV and was issued a (1)HDD200 sidecar. I then requested to be upgraded to the new all in one DCT5100, so they traded my (1)DCT2000 & HDD200:)

Don't get too excited about this box, cause most of the features aren't enabled yet:(

So if I don't have HDTV then there is no sense getting that box right? It's just made for HDTV people and not the standard box they give you at install now?

The digital channels look great & (2)HighDef channels are incredible, but the analog channels 2-99 need the software/firware updates. Most features are not yet installed/enabled. (ie. built-in cable modem, firewire port, DVI port, smartcard, PVR & Hard Drive, etc.) This box is new to most of our local customer support, so be patient with them. Which is more than I've been at times. I feel like a damn beta tester for the DCT5100:(

If you really want it, call them up & ask.
The worst that will happen is that they say NO!

Video on demand and high-definition cable service will not be available until later this year or early 2004.
