[Modem] Intermittent Connectivity in Chicagoland

For the last few weeks, my connection speeds are very fast when the connection works. However, after 15 - 20 minutes of use, the connections seems to go dead even though all of the lights on my modem appear nornal. I have to then wait 5+ minutes in order to connect to anything again. I called and written ATT several times and have not really gotten a clear answer as to whether there is some type of network problem that might be causing this. Has anybody else expierenced this? Is it possible that my modem is going bad even though the lights appear normal and, when the connection works, everything is fast as it's even been before?

Yes. I have the exact same issue and tech support is not helping me. What area are you in? I'm in Buffalo Grove

I've had this same problem since about Thanksgiving in Skokie. Of course, tech support says nothing is wrong with their network. But then there never is.

I live in Plainfield and have the same kind of problem once in a while. It can occur either when I try to access the internet or right in the middle of browsing. It can happen several times in one day and then not happen for weeks on end.

Unplugging the modem, plugging it back in again and resetting my router seem to reestablish communication. I don't know which of the devices is at fault and have not taken the time to figure it out. I just go through the steps and it works.

The modem is a Linsys BEFCMU10 ver.2
The router is a Linksys BEFSR41

my question is are you guys splitting the cable many times ????

if you are not i would get the docsis tools in the link above and find your levels and post them here. you might need to have a better run of cable.

i know many would help and then we could determine if it is signal or if it is the services fault.

In my case the modem is connected directly to the line coming into my apartment. It is not split at all. A tech was here earlier this week because my service was out completely and he replaced connectors inside and did some work in the junction box outside. But I'm still getting disconnected. This seems like a network problem to me.

try finding the signals using the docsis tools uptop hopefully it will work on your modem.

i know some times the modems are tempermental and will disconnect net service due to frequency but also they still stay "linked"

any drastic changes in temperature or possibly anything like a person hitting a telephone pole near your home ?? it sounds like it may be a cabling issue to your homes honestly.

nah, maybe..but it was working fine..and looks like when things go wrong with me, there is usually 50 other people who have the same problem as me. Thats why i know its a network issue.

Nobody's hit any telephone poles here. And I've never had temperature changes cause me to lose my connection and and off for weeks. It always changes temperature in Chicago.
I can powercycle the modem and get reconnected. Then I will stay connected anywhere from a few minutes to a couple of days.
If you look around at the messages here there are a lot of people in the Chicago area having problems.
Last week, when I couldn't connect at all, I was told there was an outage in my area, though I'm not inclined to believe it since it was still supposed to be out when the tech got it reconnected. But they said there was a problem with a server or node in my area and it was being monitored to determine the cause of the problem.

well it shows classic cable issues but i can't be sure without the frequencies your on.

are there any other things like newly messed up tv channels ??? Sometimes the issue is when they get complaints they mess with frequencies a bit to try and straighten out the tv side.

btw i did look around and seen that there was people in your area but 50 out of possibly 8000 in chicago or more would lead me to think cabling issues as well. Some times after years of elemental abuse the cable does go bad.

other then that when your link goes down try pinging home.attbi.com if you time out there then it is a network issue 100%

Well, how many of those 8,000 people come to Broadband Reports to air thier complaints? Nobody I know. When the tech was here he checked my cable so if there's a problem it's on the other side of the outside junction box, which is a network problem. Why is this so hard to believe?

I ran a ping test. The problem is, the connection issue is intermittent.
