| *PS2 ONLINE* w/ AOL DSL/CABLE, WINGATE, & 2 NICs
HOW TO GET YOUR PS2 ONLINE WITH AOL DSL OR CABLE, WINGATE, AND TWO NETWORK INTERFACE CARDS (NICS)
Please Note: For each different type of hardware configurations I have posted, there are different software setup instructions. So, please read each one carefully and thoroughly. Thanks.
Introduction:
Like many of you, I have been unable to access the online features of my PS2 due to the fact that I have AOL Plus and Win 2000/XP. Fortunately for us AOLer's, this no longer holds true, YOU CAN GO ONLINE WITH YOUR AOL BROADBAND CONNECTION!!! And best of all, you DO NOT need the Sony Network Adapter to get online with your console. (But, if you already forked out $40 bucks for the over-priced Sony Adapter, youre still OK though...).
Well before we start, I want to clear up a few things for you Aolers that are new to networking and to those who are skeptical.
First, you cannot hook your modem or AOLs router directly to the PS2 because in order for it to work the PS2 would have to have the AOL software installed on the console. And since we all know that AOL is NOT installed on the PS2
this would not be an option. So, since we have established that we cannot go online with our AOL connection and PS2 via direct hardware hookup I had to find a way for our computer to rout an internet connection to the PS2 while we are signed on. As you all know, (or maybe dont know) it is possible to go online with your PS2 using an AOL connection (any version) by activating Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on Windows 98/ME. Unfortunately, Windows XP's ICS does not work with AOL... maybe it has to do with that little disagreement AOL and Microsoft had months before XP was released... just my little observation. In conclusion, Microsoft screwed us... NOT AOL! Shocking Huh? Well anyways, ICS is pretty much just a NAT (Network Address Translation). So, I figured that all us AOLer's would need is a NAT program that works with Windows XP and AOL and we would be good to go. Well, after testing several NAT programs (and having my OS crash and 2 reformats), I finally found one that worked!!!
Its name, Wingate 5, TADA!
I have tried this program on my HP, Compaq, self-built computer and even my girlfriend's Dell Laptop and I have not encountered an OS conflict yet. In addition, it works with Zone Alarm. Nonetheless, if you installed WinXP on your Commodore 64 and it crashes and dies, dont blame me... continue at your own risk!! Of course, do not forget to create a restore point before installing this software just in case you do encounter a problem. So that being said lets continue...
OK LETS START!!
Hardware requirements: You cannot proceed unless you meet ALL of the following hardware requirements:
- (1) Ethernet DSL/CABLE Modem
- (2) Internal Ethernet Cards (NICs)
- (1) CAT5 wire
- (1) Crossover Wire
- (1) Sony Network Adapter - OR - Linksys External USB Ethernet Card 10/100 TX
- Playstation 2
Software requirements: - Windows XP
- AOL 6.0 w/RASPPPOE, or 7.0, or 8.0
- Wingate 5.0 Get it here - »www.wingate.com
Setup Instructions:
IMPORTANT THINGS YOU MUST DO BEFORE INSTALLING WINGATE!!!
First, you cannot have any network bridges installed on your computer before or after installing Wingate!!! Wingate will not install if you have one. Wingate bridges the network adapters in its software. Your computer will continuously reboot if Wingate detects a network bridge!
Follow this link to learn how to delete a Network Bridge:
Second, you must disable Internet Connection Firewall(ICF) and Internet Connection Sharing(ICS) on all network cards and connections in the Network Connections folder in order for Wingate to work.
Please, follow this link to learn how to disable ICF and ICS:
Hardware Setup:
REFER TO PICTURE ABOVE FOR HARDWARE SETUP!!!
~ SET UP HARDWARE BEFORE YOU INSTALL ANY SOFTWARE !!! ~
Software Setup:
I. Install America Online software.
II. Install TCP/IP and Wingate
-Your Computer: The following is a step-by-step tutorial on how to install TCP/IP and Wingate 5.01.
Note: Every time these instructions ask you to REBOOT
DO IT. Success depends on following these directions precisely.
1. Verify configurations of TCP/IP 2. Configure NETWORK CARD #1 in the TCP/IP properties to Obtain an IP address automatically (DSL OR CABLE Connection is plugged into this card) 3. Configure NETWORK CARD #2 in the TCP/IP properties with an I.P. address of 192.168.0.1 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 (Crossover Wire from PS2 is plugged into this card) 4. Install WinGate (Note: The WinGate file is typically called wgsetup.exe)
1. The first step is to make sure that the TCP/IP protocol is installed on both Network Interface Cards (NIC) that are connected to your computer. If you have already added the TCP/IP protocol to the NICs, skip to Step 2: How to verify that TCP/IP is installed on the Network Interface Card (NIC) that connects to your internal network. a. Under the default Start menu select Start, Control Panel, and double click on Network Connections. *note* if using the classic Start menu you will have to right click on My Network Places located on the desktop. b. Right click Local Area Connection to open a drop down menu c. Select the Properties option - This will open the properties for all adapters and protocols installed on this computer. If TCP/IP in NOT listed, proceed with the next step. If it is installed, you should move to step 3 d. Click Install to open a new Dialog box e. Single click Protocol and click Add f. Double click TCP/IP g. Click OK h. Close the Select Network Component Type Dialog box i. Click OK
2. The second step is to configure the TCP/IP protocol on Network Card #1 (card connected to your modem). Under the default Start menu select Start, Control Panel, and double click on Network Connections. When using the classic Start menu you will have to right click on My Network Places located on the desktop, which was added in Step 2. a. Right click Local Area Connection to open a drop down menu and select the Properties option. b. Select the Advanced Tab and verify everything within this tab is unchecked. c. Double click the TCP/IP protocol listed in the General Tab d. Select Obtain an IP address automatically e. All other settings (for both DNS and Advanced) should be left AS IS f. Click OK until you leave the set-up screen
3. The third step is to configure the TCP/IP protocol on Network Card #2 (card connected to your PS2 via crossover wire) . Select use the following IP Address e. Enter 192.168.0.1 for the IP Address, the subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0, leave the Default Gateway blank f. All other settings (for both DNS and Advanced) should be left AS IS g. Click OK until you leave the set-up screen
4. Install WinGate on your computer. You will need to choose the option for Configure this machine as a WinGate Server. While going through the install process make sure to only install the component called ENS this is the NAT component that will allow you connect your PS2 to the internet. Do not install the firewall component! Continue through the installation process entering your registration key when requested.
5. REBOOT.
6. After you have rebooted your computer, you will see a Wingate icon in the system tray. Double click on it. The Gatekeeper (program that comes with WINGATE) will popup and you will see the ONLINE OPTIONS SCREEN (intended for security purposes) and it will ask you for a USERNAME and PASSWORD. HOW TO SETUP THE ONLINE OPTIONS SCREEN: Press OK when you see the box above...leaving the username Administrator" as is and the Password box blank. The next screen you will see will be a warning message saying ""You have not specified a password do you want to continue without a password?"" Click "OK". The next screen that will pop up will be a box asking you to input a new password...make sure to enter something you will not forget!! The password you just entered will be your ONLINE OPTIONS Login Password for the Wingate/Gatekeeper program.
Note: Every time the ONLINE OPTION box pops up
type in your password and you will be logged into the program. If you would prefer to not enter your password every time you open the program, check the box on the lower left hand corner of the ONLINE OPTIONS screen that says use these details next time to login directly after you enter your password.
7. Reboot your computer to ensure that Wingate completely recognizes your network configuration.
8. Make sure that Wingate and Network Card #2 is communicating properly. a. Login to Wingate b. Under System Services, Double Click DHCP Service. (If you dont see the system services
click on View, then click Control Panel) c. Click on the Bindings Tab. d. Select Connections will be accepted on the following interface only, then select 192.168.0.1 e. Select OK f. Click on File, then select Save Changes. g. Reboot. h. Note: In step d., if you dont see 192.168.0.1
reboot and try again. If you dont see 192.168.0.1 a second time after you reboot
backtrack and start all over again. :-(
III. Setup PS2 Network Adapter or Game Software If you use the in-game online setup (ex. Madden 2003) make sure that DHCP and DNS options are set to automatic!
Follow this link to show you how to setup up your PS2 Network Adapter with your setup disc:
»ps2.ign.com/articles/368/368038p1.html
Be sure when you get to the Choose Settings Screen, that you choose Automatic Settings
IV. POP IN YOUR FAVORITE PS2 GAME AND ENJOY!
Remember to give thanks to the greatest QB to ever play the game!

| reply to joemontana Hey JoeMontana, I got the PS2 online using a USB DSL modem, 1 NIC, and 1 crossover cable (thanx to BBman). The only thing is I didnt use Wingate. Instead, I used "All Aboard", which is good because there is a way to use it forever without paying a penny, unlike Wingate. |

| heatblaze, Make certain that the computer is powered down. Remove the case from your computer. Find an empty slot and remove the metal piece covering the back of the slot. Gently push the ethernet card into the PCI slot (slot looks white). It may require firm pressure but don't force the card into a slot if it doesn't fit into (the slot should be the same size as the fitting on the bottom of the card). Once the card is firmly screwed in place and the case has been put back on your computer, turn the power back on. When Windows boots up, you should see a message telling you that "Windows has detected new hardware and is installing the drivers for it." Follow the on-screen instructions and install the drivers with the available CD that came with your kit (which may require you to insert your Windows system CD...well for Windows 95/98/ME at least).
That's all. -- ·.·´¯`·.·Meteor Dive·.·´¯`·.· |

| Yeah. Hey I'm just trying to encourage you Don't be afraid tampering with your Motherboard. It's more durable than you may think. You'll be doing the same when you want some new video cards or new hard drives/CD drives in the future. -- ·.·´¯`·.·Meteor Dive·.·´¯`·.· |

| You'll have to open your board to see which one of the metal piece is covering the PCI opening. The PCI slots usually look white. Open your case and you'll see -- ·.·´¯`·.·Meteor Dive·.·´¯`·.· |

See, it was so bad now wasn't it? Alright, so you need drivers correct? And yes, now you have two NICs on your computer No harm there, now you can try to setup such networks at the one above. NIC is better if you don't want to use resources for USB. It's just plug in play That's flexibility when it comes to ethernet connections.
Alright, I am surprised XP didn't find drivers for your NIC.
Okay, is it possible you can give me the make/manufacture/ name of the NIC? I can search for XP compatible drivers for it.

| reply to joemontana Hey everyone, thanks for the great info, especially you Joe, on how to hook up with my new PS2 network adaptor through my AOL cable. Before I go out and get all these things to do so, can I ask anyone what the difference is between a Cat 5 wire and a Crossover wire? I'm having a difficult time locating this info. I actually have a CAT 5 wire already (a spare one I mean), can I sue this as my crossover wire? Fortunately I already have another NIC card so all I need to find out is about the wires. Any info from anyone would be appreciated. |
