I know I just recently changed from a Linksys "Wired" Router to the Linksys Wireless Router and i received a new IP Address when I had everything up and going. So from my experience doing installs once the modem is connected to a new Mac Address it pulls a totally different IP Address almost everytime. *I hope I made sense of that one*

You can pull a new IP by releasing your IP and shutting off your modem for a while, then turning the modem back on and renewing. Best chance is to leave the modem off when you go to sleep then reboot the modem and renew when you get on your machine the next day, although I've pulled a new IP in as little as a half hour this way.

The only reliable way I have found to change IPs
is to swap between the two NICs on my computer.
This is prevalent even more since my IP lease is
24 hours now.

Ip addresses are based on the mac address of the NIC card in your computer or WAN mac of your router. Lease times on these are supposed to be 4 days. If you disconnect the device from the modem for 4 days, your lease will not be able to renew itself and essentially, it could be taken by someone else.
Unplugging the modem will not change your IP address.\
If you leave the modem unplugged over 7 days, then the modem's IP lease may be lost, and new modem ip will be given, but because the mac address of your network card is the same, it will still pull up the same IP address. |

| I assume that once the IP goes back into the IP pool, it could be assigned to anybody. By default, being placed back in the pool means that the ARP table no longer is matching your MAC address to that IP so you wont get it again unless by chance.
Changing your MAC or NIC, which is easy to do with a Linksys, will get you a new IP maybe. HOwever, they'll then begin to charge you for 2 IP addresses based on you using two computers(MAC addresses) on their service.
Check the lease time and leave the device that's reflecting its MAC address to ATTBI off for just over that period of time, and see if that works. |

Wouldn't releasing the IP via winipcfg (Win9x) or a ipconfig /release (NT), before switching off the modem make it possible to pull a new IP in less than 4 days; Or is it the WAN side IP address that causes the problem

I have changed my IP the way I describe pretty often for various reasons... worked within an hour every time just about. A couple times I've had to let it go overnight befor eit would grab a new IP. I have had other members here do it this way, and it worked just fine for them. Don't know what else to say except works for me!

Change your NIC's MAC addres. Go to your device's properties and punch in some stuff at the "Network Address". |

This didn't work for me. I did a RELEASE, unplugged the modem, turned it back on this morning, did a RENEW, and got the same IP.
Does anybody know if the process should be different for the former MediaOne areas? I'm in Hollywood, CA. Thanks a lot, guys!

That only works every now and then. If you want a new IP, then you have to put a new nic in your comp. Or if the nic in your comp has the feature to change it's MAC addy you can just change the MAC of the nic and you'll get a new addy.
Otherwise your chances of getting a new IP are slim

Qumahlin: I agree with you 100%. Windows actually stores your IP address in the registry as a key called DhcpIPAddress, and there is also a key called DhcpDesiredIPAddress. (listed as a string in W98,as an actual address in WinXP)
Windows actually knows the desired IP address and on startup if your NIC MAC addy matches, then the DHCP server allows reassignment. If you replace your NIC, and the new NIC MAC addy is recognized as "new" then the DHCP server assigns it a new IP address. (replacing the old DhcpIPAddress)
I'm in the old Mediaone area, and to my knowledge, no one has ever been able to "force" a new IP address. My IP address was changed once in the last 2 years and that was only when ATTBI decided to change it.

I am also in an old mediaone area. The MediaOne way of doing it was to talk to tech support (chat was very convenient for this) and tell them you're having some problems and are going to change out your net card.
The MAC lock seems to have been lifted though. I can pull an IP with any MAC address now.

I went through this nightmare once after ticketmaster banned my ip address on their secure site. Yes, fun, I know.
I installed a second network card and I have new IP address. I can switch back to the other one if I want by simply moving the connector on the back of the PC - the DCHP command crap just does not work. |

No one has mentioned this yet, but if your modem supports usb connections, reboot the modem using the usb hookup. You should get a very different IP address than one on ethernet.

To get a new IP (works every time) go into winipcfg and release your current IP. Then go into your network adaptor properties and change your IP manually to 10.xxx.xxx.xxx (the x's can be anything you want but I usually just put in 10.124.124.124) and your subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 then close all that. Then wait about 5 seconds and go back and checkmark Obtain an IP address automatically and close it. You now have a new IP and it works every time. I can get a new IP that way anytime I want.
