This just happened last night and I wanted to wait a day before posting just to see if it stuck. Here's the deal, the latency is now at cable modem levels however. The network was getting so crowded that pings were always in the 300+ range during regular hours. So to fix this, instead of doing the appropriate thing and segmenting the network up, they have cut all our download rates in roughly half. I was previously getting about 1.5mbps. I've powercycled the modem and its the same result. ATTBI has cut the rates. I'm calling tommorrow to wish them a happy Xmas with this new developement. Unbelieveable these people. I've gone from 4mbps with @home, to 1.5mbps after the ATTBI switchover, and now 737kbps, AND IT ALL COST THE SAME PRICE MONTHLY!!! [text was edited by moderator] |

I remember when I joined @home almost 4 years ago thinking dang $40 a month...oh well prices should drop soon. What I wouldn't give for the speed/$ I paid then. |

| I live is Los Gatos. There was a DEFINATE change made. My pings are now perfectly acceptable at ALL TIMES OF THE DAY! Whereas I would ping 300+ everywhere and my first tracert hop would be 90-200 I now get 14ms pings to the first hop and most servers around here I play games on are now in the 50ms range. What config file are you referring to? I am not familiar with what you are speaking about. Yes, I've based this observation on about 3 days worth of doing tests the the San Jose Megapath tester on this site's tools. I actually like having better pings with a slower rate then the way it was set up before (1.5mbps down but latency was horrid) because I can again play FPS games online with little to no lag issues, I only notice the reduced bandwidth when downloading files. But, ATTBI does advertise 1.5mbps down and to halve that without notice is irresponsible. |

To see what your caps are set at, do the following. Download the attachment. (it's docsdiag made for attbi (except mediaone areas. if you are, sorry)
Run the attbi one for your system. it works with 95,98,98se,me,2000,and xp. post what it says so we can look at it and see what's going on. -- Gir Quotes: Aw, I wanna watch the scary monkey show! - "I need tacos, or I will EXPLODE....I do that sometimes..." |

I've been trying to run the docsdiag program. I just keep getting the "cable modem not found" message. My cable modem is connected and working fine. I removed the router, same problem. The modem is a linksys befcmu10.

Same problem with me. I have a Motorola SB3100 and I used to be in a Mediaone area. -- Boycott The RIAA |

I get the same results as Dr_John. I removed the router and directly connected the modem via cat-5. Modem is ATTBI issue RCA DCM305. |

| Just did this again, I'm pretty confident the cap was changed to combat the abismal latency we had.

Try specifying the SNMP community string uuu9xzr5 in the batch file. Here's how mine looks:
code:
@echo off
rem double-click this file to launch DocsDiag with default parameters
jview /cp docsdiag.jar docsdiag -community uuu9xzr5 pause

I figured out why my cable modem wasn't found when I ran the program. Zone Alarm was causing it. I disabled Zone Alarm and the program worked fine. -- Boycott The RIAA |

| docsdiag works in chicago. You have to use the community string to get it to work. Just like encomium said. I made them with the community string here »/speak/print/d···;5400929 all you have to do is run it. (direct from your computer to the modem.) -- Gir Quotes: Aw, I wanna watch the scary monkey show! - "I need tacos, or I will EXPLODE....I do that sometimes..." |

  From Montana
@attbi.com
| Well in Montana for example i would get 1700kbps download and about 150kpbs upload. Now I have a 220kbps download and a 200 upload. This is very sad i might as well go back to dial up or MSN broadband. And I don't want to be a MSN lamer so get it fixed |
