| Yay Taxpayers...Internet by DMV
Gotta love those taxpayers...flowing the never ending supply of money to government hacks. Just the fiber install alone went 25% over budget..chi-ching that will be another $600,000.00 Then they'll run the competitors out of business with taxpayer subsidized lower prices...then ON WITH THE HIKES.
The government has never successfully run any program nevertheless have done anything efficiently. I'm all for a government deployment plan...but do we really need internet by DMV? -- The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not. -Thomas Jefferson [text was edited by author 2002-11-12 15:00:55] |

Lol. If the internet was provided by DMV we all would still being using slow dial-up connections. The DMV Express? Sounds like an oxymoron to me. |

| reply to Count Hogula$ You are discounting the fact that this is local government, not federal. Local governments have run communities since the beginning of time.
If the city owns the network, they can regulate the prices as they see fit. Its foolish to think they cant. prices get to high, city gets new mayor. With AT&T if prices get too high, you suck it up and pay anyway. Please don't suggest their is a respectable alternative when these companies have monopolies.
I am really interested in why people think government is worse than private companies. Government may bungle a job and end up wasting money. However, private companies whole intention is to take as much of your money as possible from the start.
I am still against LARGE anything. If it gets too big it gets inefficient. ala General Motors, or the federal government. But a local municipality should be able to manage. Its happening all over the nation. Not to mention they can have people bid for the backbone every few years.
Greed does not work for us. I will not be convenced otherwise.
As for price hikes, who gets the profits? City officials are not compensated like CEOs. Their are no million dollar bonuses. The profits go into the cities budget to pay for services. At this point you only need to argue over poor spending.
I am just a proponent of city services. Unity is good. I would prefer to pay the city for my gas, electricity, everything. When they screw up, city officials always pay. Companies are just made not to pay.
One thing though. I will not have my city into any type of industrial stuff. Just services. The government is still the biggest polluter... [text was edited by author 2002-11-12 16:01:09] |

| reply to dnoyeB There has NEVER been a single successful government program. Even local government failure is the rule. There is hardly anything worse than a Jr. hack. As for your AT&T example...anyone not interested in service doesn't have to pay for it. There...with government run BB...EVERYONE had to pay for it whether they wanted it or not...and to add insult to injury...like ALL government programs it went WAY over budget. That is how government is worse than business. -- The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not. -Thomas Jefferson |

| Most of the older large corporations in the US started out heavily subsidised by the government or as government agencies. We have managed to hold on to the post office. I don't consider it a failure by any means. There are those however that wish to enrich just a few individuals and always are pushing for privitization. They always claim that privitization means success. The current economy would disagree. The current wave of 'scandals' would disagree. If you even want to call em scandals. Its natural that people all about money will only seek to make money and care less about the people...
What is happening as local municipalities get ripped out of the energy business? Are they getting more efficient? Are prices going down? No. They are stealing more. Prices are going straight up. The people are barred from seing where the money comes from and where it goes because they are 'private.'
At the end of the day, were all Americans. The SAME people that work for the government work for private corporations. They go to the same schools and have the same educations. So I don't understand how anyone can say just because its government its destined to fail.
Again, this is a story that comes out abotu once per month. These communities are doing well to roll out their own broadband. Id rather pay for public housing than for some fat cat sitting on the beach in the bahamas.
I should add that once they start making money your taxes will go down. (ha! I'm not that insane) But at least you can know where the money is going and get rid of the mayour if he mismanages it.
Let us not forget the government gambleing business which is quite successful and profitable. [text was edited by author 2002-11-12 16:15:39] |

| The U.S. Postal Service was privitized. And government gambling? You mean the lotto that supposed to help schools? (That's how they sold it in California). Well...that program here is a TOTAL failure. The schools haven't gotten crap, and what they do get the legislature just takes back in the form of budget cuts. Yeah...great program. -- The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not. -Thomas Jefferson |

| Do you get welfare checks? do you get food stamps? There are dozens of examples of things that not everyone uses, but we ALL pay for. Except for all other govt programs, this can gain direct profits, or at least the debt will be paid off by those who are using it. We spends millions of dollars on things that you dont use at all. The government subsidizes many radio stations that i dont listen to, but i pay taxes on. I dont have kids, why should i have to pay school taxes? The internet is the future. we are all becoming more wired. Frankly, I'd rather be paying taxes on internet rollout than many other things i've gotta pay for.
and for the person that said the government cant do anything right. Can you read? can you write? the government paid your teachers to educate you. |

| Yep and welfare and food stamp programs are filled with fraud and help no one. The government wasting billions on 1 program is no excuse for a local government to waste millions on another. BTW...I went to private school because our local public schools are a JOKE. Another brilliant example of government waste...public schools. Billions upon billions wasted and kids aren't learning. In California, universities are having to send Freshman back to remedial learning courses because the public schools just passed them to get more money. -- The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not. -Thomas Jefferson [text was edited by author 2002-11-14 08:31:04] |
