did print in color....... and i remember her doing it!
anyway the progie is "new print shop" and the printer is a
hp 540c. i have tried all 7 hp drivers in "print shop"
and get b and w prints.
i cant remember but she might have printed in color when she had win 95, now its 98, but the same progie and printer

Did you have the same printer back then, too? I remember having a color Panasonic dot-matrix so it's very possible that the software supports color printing, but it may not support (i.e. know the proper codes for) your newer HP.

The trouble with DOS programs is that each one must carry their own data about printers. Unlike Windows where the printer API is the same for each program and the driver handles the details of interacting with the hardware, a DOS program must store all the little escape codes for every task required by the printer (changing fonts, bold, underline, etc.). Even though the HP printer control codes have been very similar for a long time, they have evolved and when that software was written it may not have known about any color HP printers.

Also, some new HP printers only work with Windows drivers. Some of the functionality has been taken out of the expensive-to-manufacture hardware and is now software only (in the driver). Some printers won't print at all from DOS!

From this HP Support page:

First, ensure that the self-test prints in color before checking any of the Windows 95 software settings. See the table below for information on printing a self-test. Then, make the following changes in the Windows 95 printer properties page.

1. Select Start, Settings, and Printers.

2. Highlight the icon for the attached HP DeskJet printer; select File and Properties.

3. In the Properties window, select the Details tab and choose Setup.

4. Under the Printout options, select Automatic, Color Graphics, or Color Photo.

5. Choose "OK" from the Setup window and then choose "OK" from the Details screen. Close the Printers window and try printing the document again.

The article mentions Win95 but the procedure should be applicable to Win98 as well. There are also instructions on how to print a test page (color) if you need same.

Printing capability is written into the DOS programs by the program manufacturer but you state that you already tried all 7 drivers available in Print Shop without success. I installed that program for family and friends as well but tossed it long ago in favor of DTP programs. However, if memory serves me correctly, after selecting the applicable printer driver, there was a "graphics or printer settings" option that would enable you to toggle between monochrome and color printing. I believe it was just labeled as "M" and "C". Without the program available, I can't tell you where to look for the setting options except to suggest navigating the various menus after selecting a given driver. Perhaps someone that still has the program available can provide better insight.
