if he goes through portland latency would be doubled, fastest pings would be upper 40s just to servers then problem another 10-20 in game so pings would be around 60-70ms if he goes through portland if he goes through an LA PoP ping to gateway would be 5-10ms and games 15-25ms..

hmm, he plays competatively on servers in los angeles, I was hoping that his gateway would be in la, as going to portland and back down would hurt latency quite a bit...Too bad pacbell doesn't have 1.5/384, and I also prefer to support clecs instead of the empire, hehe.

Lasker,
If he has PacBell available in his area he should go for that, especially if he can find an independent ISP that sells PacBell in his LATA.
Our POP is in Portland Oregon, most users in Northern California are about 16 to 20 ms to the gateway, ADSL-LS may be slightly higher than the SDSL.

Do the Newbridge DSLAM's have that advantage against covad's dslams in adsl mode as well? If so, I'll recommend that he goes through a newedge isp (he's leaning more towards adsl right now). Also, where would he be routed if he were to go through britsys, as stated earlier, he's in the bakersfield area. |

We do now offer (Its New) residential SDSL with an optional block of routed IP's, this runs $89 for 384/384, $99 for 768/768 and $119 for 1000/1000. I static is included, the router is fully functional and an extra 5 routed IP's is $10 per month.

Boy I sure wish I could get those kind of prices. I pay $104 for 384/384. If I could get the 1000/1000 for $119 I would jump all over it. I am locked into a 1 yr contract however that just started. I did ask my provider Directinternet, if they could match the price, I am still awaiting a response. |

All of NewEdge DSLAM's are from Newbridge.
Newbridge was acquired by Alcatel a couple of years ago.
We have customers with good condition loops 15,000' in length holding 768/768.

Aww, 1000/1000 makes me so jealous, too bad newedge isn't in my area (are there any plans to expand the area it covers)... Currently I'm on 384/384 sdsl from megaripoff i mean megapath and it costs 139/m... It is, however a routed connection, and I get 9-12ms ping to the gateway.
I have some questions tho... Is newedge equipment better than covad's (i know that newedge offers 2.3/2.3 sdsl and covad tops out at 1.5/1.5), as in does it work out to greater distances...
Rhythms and Northpoint used coppermountain stuff and coppermountain dslams kick the crap out of covad's nokia (my covad loop at 13,900 couldn't hold sync at 768 and my rhythms loop at 14,500 never dropped sync at 784). What kind of equipment does newedge use? |

Hey Raymondh,
Well you are one of the lucky people that can possibly qualify (depending on loop length) for the line-sharing ADSL from the BTLGWA01 central office as this is the only product that comes close to the price of cable. It would also require Qwest phone service....
The dedicated may be what you want but it comes at a higher price. You may also need you old qwest phone number when placing the order to verify the address.

If price is the biggest issue i would stick with the cable and find a buddy with a T1 willing to let you house your server there

You will probably pay at least twice as much money getting DSL with NEN. Probably a lot more if you want to get speeds similar to what you are getting on your cable broadband. One of the many reasons it is so much more is because NEN deals mainly with dedicated business class types of services. However, they do offer line sharing in some markets. With a dedicated dsl line you will not need a qwest voice line. However, NEN will go through Qwest to provision a "new" line or circuit just for your DSL.
I don't think servers are not a problem for Britsys, however they obviously do not allow spamming and stuff like that. Any reputable ISP will be the same.
If you are still interested, give them a call or I can get you hooked up as well through Transedge (NEN's ISP).

| I am in Battle Ground, WA and have been using AT&T Cable/TV/Digital Phone for a year and a half. For the most part I'm happy with the server (speed) but disappointed with the restrictions and billing mistakes. I would like to run web/mail/vpn servers.
Britsys is available in my area using NEN but I don't know much about them. I'm paying ~$40 for AT&T internet but to get the same speed I would need to pay much more for DSL. Also, I don't have a telephone line with Qwest anymore because of the switch to AT&T digital.
What are the advantages/disadvantages to switching to DSL?
What will the TOTAL cost be for a comparable speed taking into account I will need a (dedicated) phone line?
Can I run the servers that I want?
