| reply to bigjoe826 Depending on what program you are using to download and the port(s) it uses, the admins most likely have those particular ports throttled on the firewall/gateway/router.
IMO, don't even THINK about trying to defeat their system. They may know you are trying to get around the throttle, and that is some heat you don't need. |

| reply to bigjoe826 Heh, it's reasons like this that when I helped set up my schools network we simplified the problem.
We blocked all common p2p ports, set the local group policy so that the only programs the student can open was Word, Excel, and internet explorer (except in 2 comp labs where certain dev pacakages were installed of course)
And we unassociated all sound/video files from any player...So basically if the students wanted to download and listen to somethin..it better have been written in flash cause nothing else would work No winamp, no WMP, no Real player and no start menu or install privledges to add any of them in
Why more schools don't take the extra few steps to do the same is beyond me [text was edited by author 2002-10-16 10:51:59] |

I agree Qumahlin..for it is a liability issue for any school no matter how you cut it. |

PacketShaper® by Packeteer. "Extensible traffic class definitions: Create custom criteria for measuring and controlling traffic. Classify traffic by application, protocol, address, subnet, port number, URL or wildcard, host name, LDAP host lists, Diffserv setting, 802.1p/q, MPLS, ISL, IP precedence bits, IP or Mac address, direction (inbound/outbound), source, destination, host speed range, Mime type, web browser, Oracle database, Citrix Published Application, VLAN. Combinations of the criteria are supported, enabling more targeted monitoring and control." »www.sequreit.com/vendor/packetee···aper.htm
ATTBI(cable internet) recently tested this technology in a couple of their local markets in a few states. Apparently, they were able to slow P2P apps down to 1-3KB. -- Elevators smell different to midgets. |
