| What's the DDNS for ?
I've set up one my PCs to act as a web server, it has a static IP address and uses the WAN IP of my router to listen on. The next step is buying a domain name and was looking at DynDNS.org to have the name I buy routed to my web server. As I was setting up the router for this I noticed the DDNS page and wondered if this had anything to do with using the DynDNS.org service.? I've looked at SMC's site but can't find anything about it and wondered if somebody here would be kind enough to explain the settings page and tell what if anything I need to alter in the settings if I use the services of DynDNS. The router I have is the SMC7004BR, with the (R1.95d) firmware. Any help and advice would be appreciated.
Cheers Chris. |

| I believe the DDNS function is indeed for DynDns.org (very nice company btw!), but only for those with a Dynamic IP.
If your ISP uses a dynamic IP for you, you can use DynDNS to create a host name that can be automatically updated by your router. In this way your web- or ftpserver will always be available under that hostname since the router updates it automatically at the DynDNS servers.
I have a static IP myself, so I've never seen this feature 'in action' |
