Sick of pop-up ads?

Well, I don't know if anyone here actually likes pop-up ads, but Earthlink released a pop-up blocker. I've never really used anything like this extensively before, but I'll give it a shot. There's some good features and I think the one that I like the most is the fact that I can add sites to the list that I do want pop-ups from with far lesser clicks then some of the other products that I tried (and gave up on)

Earthlink just released a preview version. Another version (free) will come out later this year.

Here's the link to download it. It would be a browser add-on like this.

You can download it here.

What? No Netscape support??? Boo-Hiss.

I don't see pop-ups anyway. My firewall and my HOSTS file block 98% of the AD servers.

Regards,

Doctor Olds

Doctor Olds uses Netscape v4.79Archivis uses IE.

The comparison: It's like bringing a knife (IE) to a gun fight (Netscape).

Thanks Archivis!! I downloaded and it seems to work great! At first the EL site was down but a few tries later I got through and got it. Easy download, fast install and so far no problems. I crossed your post over to the EL Cable forum.

Does it just stop the pop up ads? I use another program that I upgraded to the pro version, and it does a good job, but at the same time, it tends to stop legitimate popups as well, ie child window. Anyone come across anything that should make me wary before using?

Check out the screenshot I posted. If you're at a trusted site that you WANT popups for, then click on the "Add this webpage to the Pop-up inclusion list"

You can do it for the web page or the entire site.

I've been using it for several days and it's been working rock solid.

I've been using it for a couple of days now and it's worked flawlessly so far.

My only complaint is the amount of real estate the icon takes up on the toolbar, but it's not so bad that I can't live with it. I could understand if they were releasing it for everyone, but since it's only for existing EL customers do they really need to brand it with such a big icon?

I thought it was a good idea, integrated into IE ala Opera and installed it last nite. But it slows down my browsing noticeably. I had to uninstall.
Wildgod from P2P suggested free surfer MK II and it still is the best free program out there. No hit on performance.

Thanks for the info. on the pop up blocker. For those who have IE 6.0 and want to save some real estate on their toolbar, IE 6.0 lets you customize what radio buttons appear, etc. Since my mouse has forward and back buttons I do not need the radio buttons on the toolbar also. Try also moving your address window to the right of "Help" on the top line (file----help) saves even more room.

I've used AdShield for a long time. It blocks pop-ups and ads, and does a damn good job. It is free, and you can go to the Support Forum and grab someone's already-comprehensive block list.

I add maybe 2-3 URLs per week to my list-- other then that, it just runs and runs.

FYI, if you use Mozilla (not Netscape 6/7, I mean Mozilla from »www.mozilla.org/ ), it has a pop-up blocker built in too, plus you can choose to block images from sites (It lets me set Mozilla to ignore automated popups and to not load ads). It works pretty well, and still allows user initated pop-ups to happen.

It's nice, and surprising EarthLink is specifically choosing to offer software along those lines, as sites that have pop-ups I'm sure doesn't like it...

I tried it and it works great. Remember to configure it for exactly how you want to it to function, ie., allow pop-ups for certain sites, customize response and away you go.

Too bad it's for Earthlink/Mindspring customers only!!!

Right click on an empty area of the task bar and make sure "Popup-Blocker" is checked. If it is not checked then left click on it to check it. If it is checked and you still dont see it try grabbing th toolbars and dragging them around. There are handles on the far left but you may need to right click on the toolbar and de-select "lock the toolbar" before you are able to grab anyhting and re-arrange it.
