Re: Is attbi throttling kazaa/grokster in Sacramento?

I live in Sacramento and I am having the exact same problem. I download from kazaa and it wont go over 1k a sec, but downloads in IE go at 150k. So today I called their tech support and of course they have no idea what I’m talking about. Then the dick head ask me why I am using kazaa and starts accusing me of downloading copy written material. So I tell him it’s none of his business and that’s not good customer service.

I really find it odd that about 3 nights ago Kazaa halts to a crawl for me. Then I search the internet and it just happens that other people on my provider from my area are having the exact same problem. Yet ATT still denies everything.

You should be careful who you call a "dick head", that person might be reading the forum that you directed them to.

I think that the conversation probably went closer to
"are you using kazaa to download copyrighted materials?"

"no it's uh train videos"

I'll bet you even asked to speak with a supervisor.

WTF?! Kazaa is argrubly the best sharing prgm out right now. Before you know it its gonna be doing this to all our sharing prgms. All I know is that if ATT touches IRC, i'm dropping the service immediately.

Amazingly enough, I see this happen more than not. On the other foot, I've also seen posters here paste entire chat transcripts with techs to make their point, whether it's right or wrong. They figure if they can put the tech's name in print, that it's some sort of intimidation.

I've had similar things happen to me, including one person who said they were going to copy the chat transcript and give it to the local news station! WTF? Sorry guys, but if it's a difference between giving you what you want, and what is allowed, then I'm sticking by the company, for that is what feeds the family and I'm not screwing that up for anybody.

I like it when people complain about not being able to break the law. "Oh my god, AT&T is doing things that prevents me from breaking the law! How dare they! I'm canceling my service right now and getting an ISP that will allow me to break the law as I wish! wah wah wah"

Re: Is attbi throttling kazaa/grokster in Sacramento?

And downloading music that bands specify are fine for p2p purposes is breaking the law?? The point is, ATT makes false assumptions, and if they continue to do so, they will lose customers.

Zed

@aol.com

LOL! People who use Kazaa to download only non copy righted material are few and far between (if they even excist at all) and you know it. Don't piss on my boots and tell me it's just water.

Also almost all MP3's out there available on Kazaa are copyrighted, there's no way to tell what's copyrighted and what's not.

And trust me, AT&T doesn't care if they lose some bandwidth hogging pirates.

I don't use Kazzaa or know if ATT is throttling that program/port, but my WinMX works fine. Just tried to download a few mp3's and it's "fast" as it always was and maintains the speed throughout the entire download.

Most of my bandwidth that I use or had used never went towards Kazaa... I am downloading tons of stuff at full speed and uploading stuff at full speed too and I know there are more people out there on AT&T that also do this and simple people like you just blame it out Kazaa when Kazaa is really not that great for geating anything as I have sources to get things within hours of it being released so why should I bother using Kazaa anyways besides a few mp3's which are worth a lot less than other software that I own such as Office XP Professional or Adobe Photoshop 7... those 2 combined cost around $1000

Zed

@aol.com

I don't care where/if you get your warez from or if you're a bandwidth hog. The point of my post is that it's amusing when people complain about not being able to break the law with Kazaa and it's even funnier when some try to imply that they never download copy written material, they download um train videos...

Now I don't care if you download pirated material or make copy written material available for others to get from you, it's none of my business but when measures are taken to prevent you from breaking the law in this way and you go onto a message board and complain about it expect people to laugh in your face.

So are u trying to say we should make cars that only go up to 65mph, so less speeding laws will be broken? Disabling Kazaa will not stop any of us getting materials we want with broadband. If they are gonna block Kazaa why not block the rest??? AT&T has been awful since the @Home transaction. We all stick by AT&T expecting things will better and what do they do? They shit on us!!!.

Kingsfan why dont you register up ....... but i agree with him ATT is slowly but surely turning to crap. They have redone everything so that they pocket more money (yes i understand they a business trying to make a dollar). You ever think why having your own modem went from a 10.00 dollar discount to a 3 dollar? or that they give you a measly 3000/384 connection for an outrageous 79.99? Or why they sold AOL their stock back or why they merged with Comcast or why they are selling their broadband to Earthlink? This is a company out to make a killing and eliminate theirs DEBTS.

August 10, 2001 - Had ATT@Home - 35.95 a month w/10 dollar discount for modem @ 3000/128

December 5, 2001 - Had ATTBI - 35.95 a month w/10 dollar discount for modem @ 1.5/128

June 1, 2002 - Had ATTBI - 35.95 a month w/10 dollar discount for modem @ 1.5/AND THE NEW 256 (this is when i thought that they were starting to look out for the consumers)

July 1, 2002 - ATTBI - 42.95 a month w/3 dollar discount for modem @ 1.5/256 (this is where they screwed alot of people who had bought their own modem)

August 1, 2002 - ATTBI - 79.95 a month w/3 dollar discount for modem @ 3000/384

NOW - went back to the 1.5/256 cause i cant justify looking back to August 1st, 2001 at the speeds i got for 35.95 vice the NEW Ultralink at 79.95. Ultralink IMO is way too much!

Not a very good comparison. Cars get us from place to place, nothing illegal about that while Kazaa is virtually used only to privide people with free material that otherwise they would have to pay for.

Kazaa makes it easy to get these materials, easy for newbies who wouldn't have the slightest idea how to get these things otherwise. And while there may be many other ways to illegally download material you'd have a much harder time finding it elsewhere and there is nothing wrong with making it harder to illegally download this material.

""You ever think why having your own modem went from a 10.00 dollar discount to a 3 dollar?""

Because the cost of cable modems has went down drastically since they first implimented the $10 discount? They were originally $300 at that time while now they are as cheap as $20. Seems like common sense to me.

""or that they give you a measly 3000/384 connection for an outrageous 79.99?""

outrageous? if it weren't for cable in my market we'd have to pay well over $200/month for that speed. $80 is a bargain IMO.

""Or why they sold AOL their stock back or why they merged with Comcast or why they are selling their broadband to Earthlink? This is a company out to make a killing and eliminate theirs DEBTS""

Practical business tactics. They weren't making money before they have to change things and make deals to be profitable otherwise they go bankrupt and we are out of our broadband connections and have to switch to either much slower DSL or in my case unbearable 28K dial-up.

If you suspect that they're ('they're'...Ooo, love that nondescriptive pronoun) doing a DoS attack by making mass anonymous upload requests on port 1214 as mrchipb quoted The Jackal as saying was possible, then just do a netstat like Jackal said. (Type 'netstat -an' in a DOS prompt.) If you get way more connections on port 1214 than you should be getting, you may be right.

I just like to say thanks for everyone at this forum. You guys have been helpful. It pissed me off that I couldn't download anything but then somewhat relieved that i wasn't the only one experiencing the problem. Special thanks to Heidi95843 for info on HTTP-Tunnel. It works like a charm! I was tempted to switch over to DSL because of this. After all, isn't that what broadband is all about? faster downloads? I resorted to using Morpheus for a while but found that to be slow and you don't get very many results, not as much as KaZaa. Again, thanks to everyone here at the forum!! It only took me three weeks to find it!!

"outrageous? if it weren't for cable in my market we'd have to pay well over $200/month for that speed. $80 is a bargain IMO."

Time to move out of the sticks! 80 dollars is overpriced. Cable Internet is nothing like Cable TV or your phone! If your phone went out once a day or if your cable tv shut off for about 3 hours would you keep it? NO! All im saying is offer some friggin consistency. All ive seen is my bill going up and my internet connection problems on the rise as well. They need to make it "guaranteed" for the money they are charging. Take a look at OOL if i was paying 39.95 a month for a 10000/1000 connection and i could only get 6000/500 i wouldnt complain but when i get 1.5/256 which at some times goes to 800/150 for 42.99 a month i think theres a little room for some complaints about how they do business.
