@attbi.com | Is attbi throttling kazaa/grokster in Sacramento?
Last two days as all downloads start they appear to have fast speed but then immediately start going down until each is under 1 kb/s Uploads too.
Noticed on two different computers in two different locations, both hooked to attbi. |

| reply to fireguy ATT has nothing to do with it. The anti file trading saviors of the universe, have decided that trading is a threat to the very existence of all humanity. What you are experiencing, is a denial of service attack. Not directed at you per se, but at the server of the files. Some of the p2p programs have a back door, that allow anonymous file access to their shared folder. The number of connections to this back door can't be regulated or detected. So all they do is make a shit load of requests, and eat up all the bandwidth. I read about this some place. I'll see if I can find it. -- Elevators smell different to midgets. |

| reply to fireguy Thanks for the info. I would very much like to read more about this. So EVERYONE is having trouble right now? Seems like I would have read more bitching about it on these forums.
By the way, the attbi rep I just chatted with said attbi ain't throttling.
------------------------------------------- Hello! Welcome to the Online Customer Support Center for AT&T Broadband service. A message from a customer care specialist should appear in the chat window shortly. Your session ID # is 2244327. Eric J has joined this session! Eric J says, Thank you for contacting AT&T Broadband, my name is Eric. I can help you with your question. You say, Is attbi throttling certain ports or IP's? Eric J says, By throttling do you mean blocking entirely? You say, Kazaa or grokster Eric J says, I'm not sure what port grokster uses, but Kazaa works with our service. We however do not provide technical support on either of those program. What type of program is grokster? A peer to peer transfer program like Kazaa? You say, in past week downloads or uploads all begin fast then steadily go to less then 1 kb each. Appears as if there is throttling of the ports these programs use. Grokster uses same fasttrack service as kazaa. You say, Are you saying you are not aware that attbi is doing anything? So it must be a fasttrack problem? Eric J says, No, we do not throttle the ports that those programs use. There is not an maximum upload limit, or anything that would cause your uploads to drop like that You say, Ok, thanks. I will try to find out if there is a problem with their services. ---------------------------------------------------- |

A message from a customer care specialist should appear in the chat window shortly. Your session ID # is ******. George C has joined this session! George C says, Thank you for contacting AT&T Broadband, my name is George. How can I help you? You say, Is AT&T doing something to make Kazaa download slow? George C says, I don't think so... I downloaded 10 gigs of porn last night and it seemed to go fast enough. You say, Right. Is AT&T trying to block Kazaa? George C says, nope! AT&T supports porn @ FULL SPEED! You say, I see. You say, so it must be a problem with Kazaa? George C says, I'm downloading porn right now and it's working fine. Have you tried clearing out your temporary internet files? You say, No I havn't, but i'll give it a shot thanks. George C says, If that doesn't work, Unplug your modem and wait for about a minute, and then plug it back in. George C says, your porn should download mighty quick after that. You say, Right. I don't believe any DOS would be doing that. I'm remember that ATT is in an agreement to try to stop P2P. |

DoubleT Premium join:2002-04-09 Dallas, TX | Why would AT&T go out of their way to stop P2P? Its one of the main reasons people get broadband. And why would they target only Kazaa and Grokster? |

You don't believe that the RIAA or any member of the music industry would do such a thing? Yet you choose to believe that ATT would?
"Create a DoS attack for Morpheus/Kazaa is quite simple. In fact, only the connections made from other users with the same application can be regulated and detected from the client. Anonymous connections (directly at 1214/tcp port) cannot be detected even by most personal firewalls such Zone Alarm, 'cause Morpheus/Kazaa needs to be in totally "Allowed zone" to open connections to outside sources. This "architecture" let's us flood this little web server with HTTP requests, in order to use all the available bandwidth and block Internet access on the target host. Each connection, in fact, will generate a socket in "TIME_WAIT" status on 1214/tcp port(visible with a simple NETSTAT command on the target host) that will cause the saturation of net resources." | reply to fireguy Um People...
A Denial of Service Attack would only effect searching and finding more sources.
if your downloading from me at say 100k a second..and someone launches the worlds largest dos attack against kazaa...you'll still be downloading from me at 100k a second because we are DIRECTLY connected hence that whole Peer 2 Peer thing
it's just like a DCC in IRC...if someone is DCC'ing you a file, and you get kicked off the server...your DCC continues as long as they don't cut you off or turn off their comp |

If you will re-read the thread, you will see that the explanation of a DOS attack on Kazaa, is in reference to attacking the software that is installed by the end-user, not the company(Kazaa.com) itself. -- Elevators smell different to midgets. |

| reply to fireguy Here's a test to try. Change the port Kazaa is using. Get a couple of your friends in the Sacramento area to change the port from 1214 to something else (see »www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers and pick something unused or private). If the transfer speeds get better then yes, ATTBI is throttling Kazaa network usage. |

How are they gonna mess with the software unless they send you a virus..it's not happening, and you can't DOS attack a specific program lol |
