Beginner Tutorial - First Animation In Image Ready

Okay, now let’s animate that nice, shiny red ball. It is very simple, so suitable for your first animation.
EDIT: I didn't include a shadow or any other special effects in this tut as it was lengthy already, and doing the explantions and pictures for such would have made it much longer yet.
At the bottom of the tool bar in PhotoShop, you’ll see this:

The circled area will say “Jump To Image Ready” when you mouse over it. Do it, and we’ll get started on the animation of the ball.

Here is what Image Ready will look like while we’re working in it (more or less; I kind of keep a hodge-podge arrangement, and move things around a lot).

Here are the palettes we will be using: Layers and Animation.

Okay, the easiest way to do this is to merge all layers so we only have one we need to work with. To merge all layers, just click in the box to the right of the “eye” (shows in visible layers), except for the box that already has the paintbrush in it (this is the selected layer that can be edited with tool and filters, etc.). When you click in the empty boxes, a link of “chain” appears, showing that these layers are now linked to the selected layer (the one with the paintbrush showing). Now, go to Layer>Merge Linked, and select it.

Voila! All our layers have been combined into one layer – of the completed ball – that we can now play with.

The animation palette will default to one frame. Let’s add another, by clicking on the little arrow on the upper right of the palette, then selecting “New Frame.” A second frame of the Red Ball Layer is now visible in the Animation Palette (note: both frames now show the one layer).

Now, Image Ready will associate frames with layers automatically, but I’ll let you experiment on your own with that option: for this tutorial, we’re going to associate the frames and one layer we’ll be using by hand, so we can keep “hold” of what it is we’re doing.

We only need the one layer with this method, as I said above. So, click on the first frame, then go to the tool bar and click on the “Move Tool.”

Now, using the arrow keys on your keyboard (you can do this by clicking and holing the right mouse button over the ball and dragging it to the position you want, but this way is easier and more precise), move the ball to where you want it to be at the “bottom” of it’s bounce.

Notice that the ball moves in the frame selected in the Animation Palette, but not the other frame. Pretty cool, huh? That’s how we get away with using just the one layer.

Now, using the arrow keys on your keyboard, after selecting frame 2 in the Animation Palette, move the ball where you want it to be at the “top” of its bounce.

Now, click on the first frame of the Animation Palette, then go to the little arrow that controls actions at the upper right of the Animation Palette (where we went to create that new frame, remember?), and select “Tween.” In the dialog box that comes up, put the number “6” in the “Frames to Add” box. Leave all other settings at default; these are where we want them for this animation.

Now, set the frame delay on each frame. You set the frame delay by right clicking on the setting located at the bottom of each frame in the Animation Palette (you’ll see the default setting, “0 sec.”), and select one of the preset times, or “other,” and add your own time in the dialog that comes up, then click okay. For simplicity, we’ll use the preset of “0.2 sec.” – “0.15” sec. would probably be better for the bouncing motion, and you can play around and see what delay, or combinations of delays (you can set different ones for each frame) you like best.

That’s it! Our ball’s ready to bounce. Just hit the “Play” button (looks like the controls on an mp3 player) at the bottom of the Animation Palette to see your ball bounce!

To save as a gif, just go to File>Save Optimized As, and click okay in the dialog box that comes up. We’re keeping this simple, so I’m not going to talk about optimizing settings for size and other things that will be mentioned in later tutorials. But you can always experiment and have fun in the meantime, learning things too!

Here is the finished animation at the frame rate set to 0.2 sec. Oops, sorry, forgot to mention this is a tutorial thread, and to create one for comments and play.
