| Any way to get Static IP on ATTBI?
Hey guys. I am contemplating ATTBI when my home becomes servicable in the next month or so. I have to have a static IP though. I run an exchange server and a small volume webserver for family photos and movies of the kids. Is there any package offered by ATT either home or business that includes a static IP? I don't mind paying more as long as it isn't over $100 or so per month. I can't find anything to that affect on the ATT small business website. It jsut talks about DSL. Thanks. |

| No static IP. But you can use a dynamic DNS service (like dyndns.org) which works around the issue. Also, if you keep your server up (which renews the DHCP lease regularly) your IP rarely changes (mine has only changed once since the @HOME -> ATTBI migration). |

| reply to shadowreader1 The only time my IP changes is when I switch the MAC address for the device doing the primary connnection (i.e, whether I use my router's default IP, or clone an IP from one of the computers on my network.
Depending on which MAC addy I use, I can tell what my IP will be. A given MAC will always get the same IP, and each MAC gets a different IP.
And as MrSprite indicates, the IP associated with my router's MAC hasn't changed since December. -- ...I'll see you on the dark side of the moon... |

| reply to shadowreader1 You can call ATTBI and pay an extra X amount per month and get a static IP can't you?
I know with almost all other IP's you can. Some people it's like $5/mo/ip but it varies quite a bit. -- We're gonna win twins, we're gonna score. we're gonna win twins watch that baseball soar! |

| reply to shadowreader1 As rockotman points out, they base the IP on the MAC address. Unless you change your network card, you should get the same IP address assigned back to you. My IP has been the same here since January. The only time it changed was when I hooked up a different machine to the modem to test it. When I disconnected that machine, and hooked up my own computer to the modem, I got my original IP back again. |

Like everyone has been saying, unfortunately ATTBI doesn't have static ip addresses. Only way to get yourself one is getting ahold of the business services dept. It'll more than likely cost you about $95 - $100/mo for service, but that way you'll have access to a static ip.
And like pplchamp1 said, running any type of server on the service is against the terms of service, get caught and you're S.O.L.

Yes, I could do that as well, you also may be taking an IP that is assigned to someone else by doing that. Another thing that if ATTBI finds out about would put you behind the 8-ball. -- I ain't got time to bleed! |

You might not want to do that... you are probably hosing up the "rightful owner" of that IP address whenever you do. |

For $9.99/mo., I got a WEB hosting company to give me •A static IP •My own domain name •Disk space, e-mail accounts, etc
I wont mention which one I chose, because there's too many out there and I think the one I have is just okay.
The point is - you can have attbi and let someone else do your hosting. You wont have to be sneaky and violate the TOS. |

What roll out? So far they deny it exists whenever I contact them. |

| reply to SkippyST$ Why would someone need a static IP, except to run servers? Personally, I have a dyn dns to get to my box, but my point is, why would they contradict their own TOS by offering a static IP that isn't needed? -- "I drank what?" -Socrates |

| Running servers is exactly the point. My original question was how to get a static IP with ATTBI. Running a server is my primary need for this. I have a Microsoft Exchange server for email and outlook web access. I would only want to do this within the boundaries of the TOS agreement so my question is a deeper one I guess. Does ATTBI offer a plan with a static IP which allows servers(This is almost superfluous since any ISP can figure out that a static IP is mainly needed for a server)? On second thought I may just stick with my trusty enhanced DSL from southwestern bell. They let me do anything I want with it and give me 5 static IP's. Sounds like the ATTBI TOS is getting out of hand anyway with all the router/WiFi restrictions. Pretty soon they are going to start sending people over to your house to check up on you. |

| Oh oh. Toppins, you and I are going to miss old ION and Sprint Biz DSL more and more.
AT&T looks like they are offering business cable internet in some markets. Their 3Mb down, 512kb up service is only $299 per month.
And no mention of a static IP. Only stuff on web hosting. |
