| Must have programs
So far I am really liking my Mac, and iTunes rocks. I was wondering what programs or utilities everyone here suggests, or finds useful. I know RC5 will come up, and I will be setting that up later on this week.
Thanks!!! -- Its not you Its_Smee, aka j789........ |

| Okay, here's some of my killer apps I could not live without in OS X.
Browser: Mozilla. Tabs - 'nuff said. IM: Proteus. I like it better than Fire. Email: Entourage. The only MS product I used. IRC: Snak. BitchX was just a little too screwy in X. FTP: Captain FTP. Arr, matey.
Other useful apps: TinkerTool. Lets you customize the GUI a little. Visage. Change the boot panel, dock poofs, etc. ASM. Bring back the app switcher menu at the upper left. TransparentDock. Customize your dock.
There are many many more good utilities for X out there, if I still had my Mac I could recall most of them too. I would also recommend reading this page:
»homepage.mac.com/megasad/ibookswan/
It documents one guy's first Mac purchase, an iBook, and details what he did to customize his Mac. Very well written and informative, plus lots of links to utilities and such and tips for optimizing your Mac OS X experience. [text was edited by author 2002-06-18 03:15:07] |

| reply to BrushedTooth for an all-around, nifty little OSX graphics app/utility that's fun and freeware to boot,
check out PhotoStickies
once at the webpage, see links at top. click "material", then "software". »home.arcor-online.de/grunenberg/···enu.html
EDIT: whoops...the PhotoStickies link is right on the main link too....

Cee Pee You www.unsanity.com - displays CPU usage in menu bar
ASM - freeware Application menu in upper right corner like OS 9
GraphicConverter - poor man's Photoshop
Fink - to run X11 apps parallel to OS X
QuickTime 6 Preview - streaming video rocks.
WeatherPop - realtime temp in the menu bar

| reply to BrushedTooth Graphic Converter - Pretty neat and basic graphic editing app (as stated before) (shareware). I don't have it yet, but Photoshop 7 is the big daddy.
DeLocalizer Will help you reclaim some HD space from removing the non-American English localization resources you don't want.
Adium. Short, sweet, and simple AIM client.
MoonDock Displays the moon phases in the dock and, if you want to, in a transparent floating moon on the desktop.
MetamorphX Theme switcher. Use this and the Alumite theme. Very cool Aqua replacement.
WeatherPopAdvance, FruitMenu, Mozilla, and CeePeeYou are also must haves (and allready stated earlier).
[edit]Carbon Copy Cloner How could I forget this! Perfect for making perfect copies of OSX partitions/disks. I use this once a week to copy a full backup of my OSX startup disk to another partition. -- Tell me how you drive and I'll tell you what kind of idiot you are [text was edited by author 2002-06-18 15:40:01] |

| reply to BrushedTooth Given that I'm lazy, I just put a link to this thread into the FAQ (much easier than cutting, and pasting, and fixing). It's under useful little utilities (OS X). -- Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional... ***FAQ*** |

| reply to BrushedTooth You may also like:
Radio free, Stream Catcher or iNet Stream Archiver - For copying internet streams which gets converted into mp3.
Macjanitor - Freeware utility to run the system's daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance scripts (located at /etc/daily, /etc/weekly, and /etc/monthly).
These scripts are normally run between 3am and 5am, and will not be run if you shut off your Mac at night. This will allow log files to grow very large, and prevent system databases from getting backed up.
XOptimize - Prebind tool optimizes app launch & run times
Son of weather Grok- Displays weather, good combo with WeatherPOP pro.
Lite Switch X - Keyboard application switcher like in OS 9.
IE Cache Trasher 1.2 X - Trashes Internet Explorer's download cache file.
Web Jumper - Floating window to search 14 different search engines.
Zingg - CM lists all apps that can open a file.
Ambar - Displays icons for all running apps in the menu bar.
Sherlock Menu - instantly access Sherlock search channels.
Net Monitor - Tool to graph network interface throughput.
Those are a few just off the top of my head. I may have missed some -- Calvin Lee Creative Director Mayhem Studios |

| reply to BrushedTooth Wow, thanks for all the replies, that is a lot of stuff to get, but I already started to. I just finished installing my logitech cordless optical mouse, and OS X mouseman software, works very nicely a lot better than that single button corded mouse.
Great idea about adding to the FAQ! -- Its not you Its_Smee, aka j789........ |
