IDSL?

Ok, I live 20,000-22,000 ft away from the CO in my town. DSL is available in my town, however i am not sure if IDSL is. Telocity supposedly provides DSL in my town, but on their webpage, I get an error message, and when I call them, it takes them at least 5 mins before they come back and say "uhh sorry, you are not in our service area, sorry."
I get this from all DSL providers. What is the deal with this? Is IDSL available everywhere that ADSL is available? Is it possible that a DSL provider would try and hook ADSL up at my house? I have heard of people that live 24,000 feet plus and have good ADSL connections. Any suggestions? and don't say satelite, because 1)very expensive, 2)pings are terrible, and 3)equipment is expensive.

Re: IDSL?

IDSL is not implemented everywhere that ADSL or SDSL is offered. At least as far as my knowledge goes...anyone else?

Hi tangy. Sure IDSL should be available. IDSL is for customers who are too far away from the CO(Central Office). Usually when you are more than 18,000 ft away. The speed for IDSL is 144/144Kbps. It's not as fast as regular DSL, but it beats the heck out of 56K. Plus it's an always on connection unlike ISDN. IDSL focuses on the ISDN technology(ISDN+DSL=IDSL). But instead of just focusing on the B channels, IDSL also utilizes the D channel. 2 B channels=64Kbx2=128 and the D channel=16Kb=144Kbps. Shop around for an ISP who offers it. Covad is one. The website for them is www.covad.com . Good luck and let us know.

Re: IDSL?

Im aware of all of the technicalities of IDSL, however i cannot find anyone who provides it in my town. covad says,
" Service Not Available
Sorry, DSL service is currently not available in your area. Please fill in the following fields so we can notify you as soon as Covad service becomes available in your area."
telocity, same answer, as is with rhythms, northpoint, and my local telco doesn't provide it. my town sucks. no cable either.

Re: IDSL?

Thats aboyt all you can do short of Satelite. MSN is offering DSL. It's through Sattelite and is about $39.00/month. You could give them a try. You can find out about it at www.msn.com . Good luck on your journey. Here's a more direct link www.essentials.msn.com/access/ .

IDSL, ADSL, ISDN, SDSL etc. etc. are all considered "optional accessories" to POTS through the telcos. They'll either have a given option available from your CO or not. It's frustrating, but is the same as not having caller-id or something else available. Sometimes you're just stuck waiting....
Been there

IDSL uses a different DSLAM than either SDSL or ADSL, so unless they have installed an IDSL dslam you'll be out of luck. MSN's satellite access is seperate from their dsl service. MSN dsl is through Northpoint, and their satellite is through Starband. Starband is pricey though. To get MSN sat access you need to buy a compaq from Radioshack and then the service is 59.99 a month.

Re: IDSL?

so buy a new POS compaq computer to get an expensive satelite that has terrible pings? no thanks...

Re: IDSL?

No, you could get the satellite service directly from starband or from dish network. It would be 69.99 a month plus 399 for the usb device.

ADSL and SDSL are available to a very select few that happen to live in the metroplex of a large city. IDSL extends that to about 35k ft., where available. You might want to look into ISDN, if you can afford it. I agree with you, satellite (and wireless for that matter) suck. Fortunately, IDSL is available to me, and that's what I'll have come Saturday.
