I've heard people talk about ping times and testing for packet loss and I was wondering how to test those? Do I need to ping or do a tracert on my IP address?
thanx |

| »/linequality This test should be a good start. Just enter your IP. Then hit join que. If your running ZoneAlarm or ZoneAlarm Pro. You must set your internet security setting. To MEDIUM. So your pc may become pingable. You may need to do this. With other firewalls. Meaning do a settings change for the testing. »Tools FAQ »Why do I need to be pingable? | reply to phatTweaker Honestly, I don't recommend DSL Reports speed test. They've changed their applets and they are slower than usual. Here's the text of an e-mail I got from a friend from Roadrunner:
I think you can disregard the problem I reported to you yesterday about the speed "problems" we were seeing the last few days. A couple others and myself were working on this last night and we noticed something. All of these speed test sites that we've been testing at and many more on the internet all use a common applet to interface the speed test sites. »chi.speakeasy.net »www.nyc.speakeasy.net/ all the tests here as well »/stest/0 and many more around the internet.
This applet is distributed to many sites by dslreports.com And I've discovered that a few days ago, they changed the program. What's more, all of these testing sites filter down into this page where people can log their results... »/archive and the overall average for all of RoadRunner has fallen to #27 with the average speeds just a couple weeks ago were in the 1900k range..are now around 1500k since their new applet was introduced.
I spoke to a few people from that site using various ISP's...and several people now are reporting this.
I then tried a couple of FTP Downloads from a place in Ny and also downloaded AOL 7.0 and the speeds are fine..coming in at 170KB to 180KB even while all these speed test sites are reporting only half that number.
Even today I'm seeing the following results from the Time warner site. Your throughput is 1249 kilobits per second. That site has always been less reliable though given it's in California vs we being here in Ohio.
Anyways..thanks for your time. This might be something RR would want to know about given as many people use these testing sites with DSL Reports applet.
I use speedtest.com (bandwidthplace.com) with no problem. Not that I don't like DSL Report's other features, like the Tweak Test and the forums, but if this is true, I'd wouldn't trust the speed test. |

| DSLREPORTS now has very large list of other speed test sites. And I don't think all that are on the list. Use the same applet. I could be wrong. »/stest?more=1 Either way. The previous link I posted wasn't a speed test. It was a line quality test. Which is always a good place to start. If you think you have a line issue. But I agree it always good to use multiple sites for testing of speeds. -- *IGGYZ* *TeamZ* |

| reply to phatTweaker Also, there's a BBR forum for tweaking your connection ("Broadband Tweaks"):
»Broadband Tweaks
If you need help with tweaking, or if you have high pings, packet loss, etc., post to that forum. In the post, make sure to answer the 11 questions listed in the "Before you ask for help, click right *here*!" link at the top of the forum's page. That way, people can help you much more easily. -- Yeah, well, at least your name isn't Michael Bolton. Join Team Helix! |
