 What can we do to...

boost the popularity of this forum? Join the LIGHTSPEED UNDERGROUND today!

ANYONE VISITING FIBER OPTICS, REGULAR CONTRIBUTORS, OR LURKERS WHO WISH TO HELP BOOST THE POPULARITY OF THIS FORUM, CONSIDER adding the OFFICIAL .SIG OF THE FIBER OPTICS FORUM to your profile.

Our mission is to become the #1 link on a Google search for the terms "fiber optic internet", and to do that we need to boost our hit count (I think). Anyway, it's always better for the forum to have more people coming by for a visit! (even if just for a look to see what we're up to)

IF you'd like to participate, follow these simple steps:

1. "Copy" the text/HTML one of the phrases located at the bottom of this post
2. Be careful, it's HTML, and will work only if pasted as-is
3. Click on Preferences, grey strip, upper right
4. Click on Forum Prefs, in the vertical strip on the left
5. "Paste" the text/HTML phrase into the text box marked "posting .sig"
6. Identify yourself to the DSLR world as a member of the LIGHTSPEED UNDERGROUND simply by posting with your .sig showing
7. Whip out the evil grin, because you are clearly a superior upright biped.

Forget Seti, Folding and Team Helix! They are amateurs spinning their disks. Become a member of the

LIGHTSPEED UNDERGROUND

and be the envy of your peer-to-peers.

The only qualification for membership is a toobad attitude toward inferior lastmile technologies and the sincere belief that fiber optic access is the future of broadband. Nice hair helps, but is not a prerequisite.

uhh, until people actually begin having FTTC/FTTH on a *widespread* basis, I don't think we'll see many folks wander by. Just my 2 cents.

Agreed. Until some real deployment happens, it will be a tea-time discussion.

Re: What can we do to...

I dunno about pipe dream. I'm in BellSouth land, where most new developments in the last 5 years have FTTC. Problem is, for most, it's only used for vox service. If they ever figure out what they are gonna do with it, there will be an influx of folks wanting to know all about expanded FO capabilities/technologies etc. But that is a big *if* the service ever goes live. Only time will tell.

I heard BellSouth is discontinuing IFITL development. I don't know the full story on that but I think they are trying to find some other way to utilize the fiber in their 9 state areas for internet. I think that if a fiber optic telephone isn't being used for internet access, it's a big waste .

BS *did* stop new IFITL development. IFITL != DFITL (which is what they are calling the new "card swap for fastaccess without cable tv" systems).

Right now, they're trying to figure out which vendor to use for the cards that will live in the ONU's, since Marconi isn't in that business anymore. Alacatel seems to be their preferred vendor, but everyone knows Ma Bell, this could take a LONG time.

Well, I think this forum will go way up by the time FTTH and FTTC go mainstream. Then this place will be busy, and you'll be asking us to take the link out of the sig..

By the way, I'm representing the forum now. Just added it to my sig...

With 70 people currently posting in this channel ... don't know. Unless FTTH or FTTC hits every home very soon I don't see that happening. Curretly the status of those companies that do provide that service is not too good. Just look at WinFirst, sure there might be a new buyer soon but neither of those companies are out of the woods yet.

I check this forum a lot, but it seems to be dead most of the time. Hopefully this will raise some questions from others who don't know much about fiber and it's capabilities. This is the future of communication for us.

[some text to see the sig ]
War of 1812, conflict between the United States and Britain that began in 1812 and lasted until early 1815. President James Madison requested a declaration of war to protect American ships on the high seas and to stop the British from impressing or seizing U.S. sailors. U.S. ships were being stopped and searched by both Great Britain and France, who were fighting each other in Europe. President Madison also wanted to prevent Britain from forming alliances with Native Americans on the American frontier. His decision was influenced by Americans in the West and South, who hoped to expand the United States by seizing control of both Canada and Florida. Critics called the War of 1812 “Mr. Madison's War,” but others saw it as a “second war of independence,” an opportunity for Americans to defend their freedom and honor in the face of European disrespect. Neither Britain nor the United States was particularly well prepared to fight this war, and the conflict eventually ended in a stalemate.
