5 IP's with RT311 ----> Works

I have researched and researched for over a week on how to make the RT311 work with the Ameritech 5 statics. Many told me to give up and just save money and go buy a Zyxel. Why buy one when you can convert (somewhat) your current RT311 to the Ras Version 3.23 of the Prestige 310 firmware.

First you need to check your bootbase, You must be at 1.X (ie. 1.13 etc) I have read that all 2.x bootbase version will not work. Connect to your RT311 with the serial cable connection and while the boot squence is loading on Hyperterminal it will show the bootbase.

Download the the Prestige 310 v3.21 and v3.23 (I have not tested 3.25) firmware versions. Also be sure to go to Netgear and get the initial release of the RT311 firmware and the configuration file. Before you load any firmware be sure to back up your current router configuration. Just incase something goes haywire. I loaded the firmware 3 times on mine with out a hitch. Back and forth from rt311-->3.25 to P310--> 3.21. I would suggest using hyperterminal as your transfer means for upgrade.

Now go to »www.arin.net/whois/arinwhois.html and find out your IP block that was assigned to you. You can type in the one static IP that Ameritech gave you and it will show the name of who owns the block of IP's and the 7 (really 5 usable) that you own.

Upgrade the router to 3.21
Upgrade to 3.23
Your configuration should stay intact. If it does return to default (it shouldn't unless you upload a rom-0 file) you can use your backup rom-0 to restore your settings.

That's it for the upgrade I will post some screens that may help you with the setup.

I will also say that you must have a firewall system intact. You are no longer protected from the RT311 NAT/Firewall. This will leave your system open. Be sure to check your ports and I would highly suggest Sygate as a free Firewall that provides great protection for minimal cost.

I hope this helps you. If you have any questions Email me I will do my best to help you out.

Enjoy your 5 Statics!!

Umm... there's a better way to go if that's really what you want to do that gives you 3.25 and the firewall protection, but I thought forum rules kept us from disclosing that kind of information.

Also, for what it's worth, if you didn't already have a router, it makes more sense to get the Xyzel Prestige 314 than to get a Netgear. That's what the previous discussion was about. Heck, I just ordered three Prestige 314s today.

I assume you have the $250 to 300 to spend on the Prestige 314? I appreciate your concern about the rules... and I feel they were not broken. If I did in any way I apologize. I am just trying to help fellow users that are paying for a service get what they are supposed to be getting from that service. SBC/Ameritech gets a bad rap for alot of things... please... lets not add this to the list.... Thx!!

First, I spent about $118 on each Prestige 314, including shipping. Check your pricing. Makes a lot more sense to go with the real product and support for a few bucks more, if you're buying a new product anyway.

Second, I was asking about the rules for this forum as far as posting "hacks" to products. I'm aware of a better one than you posted, and was asking RadioDoc if it was within rules for me to post what I know.

Third, I don't much care for SBC, and am not a representative of any part of it. Notice the turning screw in the middle of the SBC logo?

You show me a link where I can get it for $118 and I will be quite impressed there is nothing on pricewatch or Ebay for even near that price. You may have gotten lucky on a deal but the prices these days are no where near $118. I will thank you if you can get me one for that price but I find it very hard to believe.

Apparently you missed the post by schja01 (posted 6 hours before your comment) that showed several places to get it for about $113 plus shipping. Jim's post above is even better, and it's direct form ZyXel.

No problem here as long as you don't actually post firmware, scripts that will do the job automatically, or links to them (except "official" firmware links to company sites). There *is* a prohibition about this stuff over at the Netgear/ZyXel forum, but that's not mine and I set the rules here in Ameritech.

If and when I or Justin get an official complaint from ZyXel or Netgear about this stuff (doubtful), then we'll think about what to do (probably nothing). It's not my problem that they used the same internal design for both units. Efficient dug themselves a similar hole with the 5260-thats-really-a-5660.

Okay, in that case... if netgear ran a non-profit site, that would be the web address I'd put into my broswer if I wanted information on activating features.

Seems appropriately vague to me.
